Published: September 15, 2010

Former Long Beach Mayor Beverly O’Neill and Gazette Newspapers Executive Editor Harry Saltzgaver will kick off the fall 2010 Notable Speaker Series, presented by CSULB’s College of Business Administration (CBA), on Thursday, Sept. 16.

Their presentation, titled “Overcoming Adversity: The Power of Positivity,” will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 139A of the CBA Building.

O’Neill, a three-term mayor of Long Beach and former superintendent-president of Long Beach City College, will speak about her style of facilitative leadership. She will explain how effective it is to bring people on board for a team effort rather than try to lead alone.

Saltzgaver will discuss his book Passionately Positive: The Beverly O’Neill Story and how it chronicles the creation of perhaps the most influential leader Long Beach has seen in the last 50 years. The book traces the maturation of the young Beverly Lewis through experiences with Alcoholics Anonymous that allowed her to face difficult challenges with a positive, can-do approach and convince others to do the same.

The Notable Speaker Series was established to add relevance to current students’ learning experiences and offer opportunities for professional development and intellectual engagement to alumni, staff, faculty and the community.

“A university’s stock in trade is developing ideas and knowledge,” said CBA Dean Michael Solt. “So, providing a platform for the exchange of thoughts and information is a natural extension of what we offer in the classroom and is a great way to give back to the community.”

O’Neill was Long Beach’s only three-term, citywide elected mayor. Initially elected in 1994, she was re-elected in 1998 with almost 80 percent of the vote and was re-elected to a third term as a write-in candidate—the nation’s only large city mayor to accomplish such a feat. O’Neill was a major force in changing the Long Beach economy into a diversified mix of international trade, tourism, emerging technologies, and expanding retail.

Saltzgaver has been the executive editor of Gazette Newspapers for 19 years and associate publisher for 18. He has been in the newspaper business for more than 30 years with experience on both weekly and metropolitan daily papers in Colorado and California as a reporter, photographer and editor, winning several state and national awards for both writing and photography. Passionately Positive: The Beverly O’Neill Story is his first book.

There is no cost to attend the event, but reservations are required. Visitors to the campus must purchase a parking permit at one of the yellow kiosk for $5 in Lot 15. Those attending the event should park in the parking structure on Merriam Way adjacent to the CBA Building and may park in the spaces marked “Employee Permit” in Lot 15 after 6 p.m. See the campus map for details.
