22nd Annual Campus Couture Fashion Show Held on May 14

Published: May 3, 2010

Some 200 original garments designed, constructed and modeled by CSULB students will be featured during the 22nd annual Campus Couture Fashion Show on Friday, May 14, beginning at 7 p.m. in the campus’ Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

The annual fashion show highlights the work of some 50 textile and clothing majors in the CSULB Fashion Merchandising and Design Department. While design students create the garments, merchandising students participate in the show’s fundraising and production.

This year’s show coordinators are Brittany Baloga, Mary Byrd, Deveny Spafford and Emilie Finch. The coordinating team is made up of seniors majoring in either fashion merchandising and/or apparel design.

“Campus Couture is the highlight of the year for the fashion department. Planning begins a year in advance, and design and merchandising students have to raise about $30,000 to produce the show,” Byrd pointed out. “This year’s show is truly a campus-wide effort and will feature contributions from film, photography and art students.”

From a student participation point of view, the annual fashion show is one of the largest events the campus hosts each year.

“This is an opportunity for students to present their vision to the world of fashion,” explained Suzanne Marshall, an associate professor in Family and Consumer Science, who serves as the faculty advisor working with the coordinators on the show throughout the year. “This year’s coordinators are looking forward to putting on the most professional runway show yet by utilizing unique lighting effects, staging, music and choreography.”

A highlight for participating student designers is that the show is judged by fashion industry professionals, some of whom view the event as a time to scope out new talent for internships and jobs, according to Marshall. Among this year’s judges will be Los Angeles Times fashion critic Booth Moore; brothers Chip and Pepper Foster, owners and designers of the denim company Chip and Pepper; and fashion blogger Beth Jones of The Vintage Society.
