Alan Colburn, Science Education, presented “Parochial and Public School Students Views on Evolution: A Comparison Study” at the annual meeting of the Association for Science Teacher Education. Co-authored with Ralph Varela, his graduate student, the paper was based on Varela’s thesis.

Lesley Farmer, Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling, presented a paper in December on “Fostering Online Communities of Practice in Vocational Education” for the World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society eLearning Conference in Tenerife. Farmer also contributed the chapter “Lights, Camera, Action! Via Teacher Librarian Video Conferencing” in S. Rummler and KB Ng (Eds.) Collaborative Technologies and Applications for Interactive Information Design: Emerging Trends in User Experiences, Hershey, PA: Information Science Reference.

Susan Gomez-Zwiep, Science Education, and William Straits, Science Education, presented “What About Those Left Behind? A Template for Developing Quality Science Lessons for English Language Learners” at the annual meeting of the Association for Science Teacher Education.

Laura Henriques, Science Education, collaborated with various colleagues to present three papers at the annual meeting of the Association for Science Teacher Education. They were titled “Reflections of CSULB Noyce Scholars: Program Impact and Suggestions for Improvement;” “Building Productive Partnerships Between Two- and Four-Year Institutions;” and “MERLOT Noyce Scholars: How to Develop, Implement, and Sustain a Quality Digital Community.”

John Jung, Psychology, presented a talk to the College of Liberal Arts Emeriti Faculty on Nov. 10 titled “How Digging up the Past Created my Unexpected Future,” an account of how a psychologist came to write three, going on four, books on Chinese-American history and how they affected his readers and himself. He also presented a talk at the Cerritos Public Library on Dec. 3 titled “Chinese Life in the American South Before the Civil Rights Era.” He also presented on Chinese Laundries: Tickets to Survival on Gold Mountain before the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, Los Angeles, Feb. 3. He saw the publication of his new book Sweet and Sour: Life in Chinese Family Restaurants from the Yin and Yang Press, 2010.

Maulana Karenga, Africana Studies, published an article titled “Names and Notions of Black Studies: Issues of Roots, Range and Relevance,” in the Journal of Black Studies, 40, 1 (September) 2009, pp. 41-64. He also presented a paper “Social Justice in Ancient Egypt: Maatian Discourse in Contemporary Times” at the Conference on “Ethnic Studies 40 Years Later: Race, Resistance and Relevance,” College of Ethnic Studies Conference, San Francisco State University, Oct. 7; presented a lecture “The Legacies of Mary McLeod Bethune: Lessons in Hope and Struggle” at the National Council of Negro Women, Orange County, 31st Annual Conference, Fullerton, Oct. 25; and conducted a seminar, “The Moral Vocation of Leadership: Principles and Practices,” at the Los Angeles Urban League Institute, Los Angeles, Oct. 28.

Barry Lavay, Kinesiology, recently co-authored with R. Lytle and T. Rizzo, “What is a Highly Qualified Adapted Physical Education Teacher?” Published in the Journal of Physical Education Recreation and Dance, the article was a position paper developed for the Adapted Physical Activity Council of the American Alliance for Health Physical Education and Recreation and Dance to define what constitutes “highly qualified” teachers as it pertains to the discipline of Adapted Physical Education.

Lionel Mandy, Africana Studies, presented “The I AM Model of Afrikan/African/Black Male Identity Development” at the annual conference of the National Association of African American Studies, Feb. 12, in Baton Rouge, La..

Clarissa Rojas, Chicano/Latino Studies, was invited to present a paper, “Healing: (En)Countering Medical Violence” on Feb. 17th at the Center for Race and Gender at UC Berkeley.

William Straits, Science Education, saw the publication of his article “Action Figures” in the journal Science and Children. Co-authored with Kristin Stone, his graduate student, the paper highlights a strategy for teaching children about human anatomy.

Norma Tarrow, College of Education, had an article “Human Rights and Education: The Case of the Negev Bedouin” in the refereed social science journal Hagar: Studies in Culture, Polity and Identities, 8 (2) 2008. This volume was a Special Issue on Bedouin-Arab Society in the Negev/Naqab. Tarrow lives in Israel part of each year and is involved in several research projects dealing with education and the Bedouin sector.

Terry Witkowski, Marketing, presented “The Marketing Field and the Great Depression” at the American Marketing Association Winter Educators’ Conference, New Orleans, La., Feb. 21.
