Geological Sciences’ Lecturer Wins Trek Bike Worth $500 During Eco-Week Events at CSULB

Published: December 15, 2009

Cal State Long Beach Geological Sciences’ lecturer Bruce Perry collected an early Christmas gift when he was selected as the recipient of a new $500 Trek bicycle from Jax Bike Center in Long Beach during the campus’ Eco-Week celebration last month.

An avid cyclist, Perry lives just three miles away from the CSULB and regularly commutes to work on his bicycle. Now, he will be doing it on a newer model. Perry was entered in the drawing for the bike after his participation in the second annual Bike Count Long Beach, an annual volunteer effort designed to document bicycle usage and demand in and around the greater Long Beach area.

Perry spent two hours on the San Gabriel River bike path counting cyclists that passed by in both directions, noting the sex of the rider and whether or not the riders were wearing helmets.

On hand for the presentation of the bike to Perry were (l-r) Mary Stephens, CSULB vice president for administration and finance; Perry; Matt Gfell, general manager of Jax Bike Center; and Pat West, city manager for the City of Long Beach and also an avid cyclist.
