Armando (Thomas) Ferreira, professor emeritus in the Department of Art, died on June 22. Ferreira served the CSULB community and its students for almost 40 years, beginning as a faculty member in 1957. During his tenure at CSULB, he also served as associate dean and as interim dean of the College of the Arts. He retired in 1995. Ferreira was a noted ceramicist, and is credited with helping to build an impressive program in that field and others at CSULB.

“In addition to being a caring instructor, an engaging artist, and an effective administrator, Tom Ferreira was recognized for his long term leadership in the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the national accrediting body for Art and Design departments,” said Donald Para, dean of the College of the Arts. “Tom was an important part of the history of leadership that led to establishing the Department of Art at CSULB as one of the leading programs in the country. He leaves a remarkable legacy at this university.”

“Tom Ferreira’s importance to the Department of Art cannot be overstated,” added David Hadlock, Chair for the Department of Art. “He was singularly instrumental in our becoming the first NASAD accredited program in the CSU system and the first to offer the BFA and MFA degrees. With great collegiality, effective administrative skills and a passionate commitment to all interpretations of art, Tom helped engender a strong sense of community and camaraderie among department faculty. So many of our faculty from all our disciplines, recall Tom as one of the most caring, insightful and trusted mentors from their years at CSULB.”

A memorial service is tentatively planned for early August. If you would like to be notified of the details regarding the service, please contact the College of the Arts Office at 562/985-4366 or e-mail
