Employee of the Month: Kristine West

Published: June 15, 2009

Kristine West, a program manager in CSULB’s College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE), until recently known as University College and Extension Services, has been selected by her co-workers as the campus’ Employee of the Month.

In honor of her selection, West was recognized in a special ceremony held on Friendship Walk near the University Student Union, and the walk was renamed “Kristine West Lane” for the month.

West, who joined the university in 1994, was pleased and surprised to be recognized. “I’ve enjoyed working with my colleagues in CCPE,” she said. “They make coming to work a lot easier and I am proud they selected me.”

CSULB President F. King Alexander praised West for her hard work and her service as an example of CCPE’s motto “Reach Higher.” “Kristine is very knowledgeable and has worked very hard to make intersession and winter session work,” he said.

West began her career at CSULB as a clerical assistant at CCPE, where she has remained rising through the ranks to her current position of program manager. Her responsibilities include supervising different degree and non-degree programs as well as credit/no credit courses. She directs the winter session, the May intersession and Open University.

“The common challenge to all three is making everyone happy, especially faculty members and students,” she said. “I need to be a skilled negotiator in order to bridge different interests. I try to ensure that CCPE services are ultimately in the best interests of the students.”

It is part of her job to relieve some of the bottlenecks that can develop in a busy university.

“Extra sessions like the May intersession help CSULB students obtain additional opportunities to get the course work they need, including the lower-division general education requirements,” she said. “They are a big help in dealing with enrollment overflow.”

West expressed special gratitude to the university community for its help and support.

“I had just moved to Long Beach from UC Santa Cruz where I earned my bachelor’s with a double major in literature and sociology,” recalled West, who went on to earn her MPA from CSULB in 2005. “I was brought into registration by Michelle Mumm who is in Enrollment Services now. I grew up in Cerritos and I was familiar with the university. I decided I wouldn’t mind too much if I got a job at CSULB.”
