Financial Presentation on May 21 to Help Small Business Owners with Transition Planning

On Thursday, May 21, the Office of Estate and Gift Planning at CSULB will hold the third in a series of financial presentations. This presentation, “Transition Planning for Small Business Owners,” will be made by a panel of experts and addresses what to do when it’s time to retire and you are the owner of a family or closely-held business.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. at the CSULB offices at 1000 Studebaker Road on the corner of Anaheim and Studebaker located in the Cornerstone Church building. Free parking available at the location and light refreshments will be served. There will be no selling of any services at this event.

For many owners, their businesses are the most significant asset in their estate portfolios. This simple fact makes the decision of what to do with the business when they retire an unavoidable concern. Some of the questions to be addressed include: Should I sell my business to a trusted employee? Should I sell it to an interested third party? Or, should I pass it on to my children? When do I transition out? How sellable is my business? How do I create retirement income and reduce taxes?

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for individuals, particularly small business owners, to hear from our panel of professionals who have a wide variety of backgrounds,” said Susan Berkman, assistant vice president of Estate and Gift Planning at CSULB. “Those attending will also be able to ask questions specific to their business, so I would encourage anyone interested to come.”

Speaking at the event will be Bob Greenberg, CFP, Greenberg|Graham Advisors; Paul Glowienke, MBA, Northwestern Mutual; Michael J. Munn, CPA; Delia Fernandez, MBA, CFP, Fernandez Financial Advisory, LLC; Linda Wallace, ChFC, CLU, Linda L. Wallace Financial and Insurance Solutions; and attorney Jessica Dorman-Davis, Freeman|Freeman|Smiley.

Greenberg has 19 years’ experience providing retirement, family wealth planning and investment management consulting for high net worth individuals and families.

Glowienke has been a financial representative since 2002 and is a financial advisor for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. He helps clients develop and manage a financial security plan with a focus on charitable giving.

Munn has more than 20 years of experience in accounting and tax consulting. Since 2006, he has been the owner of Michael J. Munn, CPA, an accounting firm specializing in tax consulting and compliance for closely-held businesses and high net worth individuals.

Fernandez has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. She is president of her own firm, Fernandez Financial Advisory LLC.

Wallace is a financial planner affiliated with Linda L. Wallace Financial and Insurance Solutions. She is a chartered financial consultant and chartered life underwriter. She has been in business for more than 10 years, helping individuals, families and business owners secure and protect their financial independence through comprehensive financial planning and plan implementation.

Dorman-Davis is a partner in the Irvine office of Freeman|Freeman|Smiley, a member of its estate planning department and a certified specialist in estate planning, probate and trust law.
