Salazar Returns as AVP of the Physical Planning and Facilities Management

CSULB alumnus David Salazar has been named associate vice president (AVP) of Physical Planning and Facilities Management on the campus. He will begin his new position Jan. 6.

At CSULB Salazar will be responsible for providing leadership in planning and ensuring the physical integrity and safety of campus facilities, establishing and directing the long-range strategic goals and objectives of the office, while ensuring that annual operational objectives are established and achieved.

“It’s exciting to be back at Cal State Long Beach and to reconnect with the campus. I’m really looking forward to developing working relationships with the department staff and campus community,” said Salazar. “I expect to jump right in, drawing on the experience and skills of the facilities and planning management staff to focus on organizational development as well as the many projects and responsibilities of the department. I’m a firm believer that a performance- and results-driven organization is key to meeting the goals of the university.”

As AVP, Salazar will also work directly with representatives from the CSU Office of the Chancellor, the City of Long Beach and those in the community who are involved in the development, improvement and/or use of campus facilities. At the state level, he will represent the campus during interactions with the State Department of Finance, the Legislative Analyst’s Office and other state agencies.

Just prior to taking the AVP position at CSULB, Salazar served as executive director of Facilities, Planning and Administrative Services for the San Bernardino Community College District. In that position, besides his responsibilities in managing district facilities and related administrative duties, Salazar managed a $5 million operating budget and the district’s $900 million campus planning and construction program for San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College.

Salazar is not new to the CSU system. He was a systemwide university facility planner at the Office of the Chancellor from 1990-93, was director of campus planning and development at Cal State Monterey Bay from 1993-99 and lectures at Cal Poly Pomona for its Urban and Regional Planning Department. He also worked as director of facilities at Claremont Graduate University and was the associate planner for Whittier.

“David has extensive experience in both facilities management and planning both in and outside of education,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander. “His reputation at the CSU and other educational institutions precedes him, and his ample city planning experience will be invaluable as he develops working relationships throughout Long Beach and beyond. David will be a tremendous asset at The Beach and we look forward to working with him on a daily basis.”

In addition to his long history in facility management, Salazar is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, the Society of College and University Planning, the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers.

Salazar earned an executive master of business administration degree from the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management in Claremont, a master of urban and regional planning degree from Cal Poly Pomona and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from CSULB in 1983.
