International Education Week Scheduled for Nov. 17-21

The Center for International Education announces that International Education Week will take place at CSULB, Monday through Friday, Nov. 17-21.

Among events scheduled for the week are an international symposium titled “Global Women’s Organizations Negotiate Religion” (with keynote speakers Sonali Kolhatkar, KPFK’s radio host of “Uprising,” and Rashida al-Hamdani, chairperson of the Women’s National Committee in Yemen) on Monday, Nov. 17, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., USU Beach Ballrooms; Practicing Peace Festival, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Upper Quad area between the Fine Arts and Liberal Arts buildings, and a Studio Jazz Band performance (directed by Gerhard Guter), noon-1 p.m., USU Southwest Terrace, on Tuesday, Nov. 18; “Chinese Tradition and Culture in Health and Daily Life,” 9-10:30 a.m., “Power of Understanding, Student Presentation on Study Abroad,” 11 a.m.-noon, and “Study Abroad Experience in China,” noon-1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 19, USU 205ABC Huntington Room; and a “National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Workshop on Increasing Education Abroad Participation Among Minority Students,” 9:30-11:30 a.m., USU 205ABC Huntington Room, and “Careers at the United Nations: A Public Lecture (featuring Nelly Keita, Office of Human Resource Management, United Nations Secretariat), 3:30-5:30 p.m., USU Beach Auditorium, on Thursday, Nov. 20. Ambassador Zhang Yun, consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, will speak on Thursday, Nov. 20, 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Anatol Center.

Additional activities include a short-term study abroad photo display, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, Monday, Nov. 17-Thursday, Nov. 20., in the USU 205ABC Huntington Room; and two film screenings: the Singaporean comedy film “I Not Stupid,” 2-4:30 p.m., USU 205ABC Huntington Room on Wednesday, Nov. 19; and the award-winning feature film “Outsourced” (a discussion led by geography professor Bipasha Baruah to follow), 6:30-9 p.m., USU Beach Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 20. The annual International Thanksgiving Potluck will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
