Campus Community Update #296

February 3, 2016

New Formatting Rules for Theses, Project Reports, and Dissertations

Writing Thesis

Some big changes are happening in the Thesis Office! Formating rules for all CSULB graduate level manuscripts—theses, project reports, and dissertations—have been updated to simplify the process and to parallel the current format style of other California universities.

During the transition period of Spring 2016 and Summer 2016 semesters, manuscripts using either the old 2011 rules or the new 2016 rules are acceptable. Beginning with Fall 2016, only the new format rules will be accepted.

Changes include:

  • One inch margins
  • Title page comes first
  • Signature page NOT in manuscript
  • Simplified table of contents
  • One space after punctuation at end of sentences
  • Bold font for titles, subheads and captions

Read more about these changes on the Thesis and Dissertation Office's Format Guide page.
