Welcome to the Spring 2024 semester! Foreign language tutoring will continue to be available online and in-person starting on Wednesday, January 31st. Please check the online language tutoring schedule for availability.

Notice:

In an effort to protect the health and safety of the campus community we ask that all patrons wear a suitable face mask while using the resources at the Language Lab. Language tutoring for CSULB students will be online and/or in-person. Please visit the tutoring schedule section of this page for available languages and times.

Language Tutoring

The Language Center is happy to provide free language tutoring to students enrolled in language classes on campus. Tutoring, conversation practice and other language related support is available for ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

Individual & Group Learning

The Center strives to be a welcoming space to practice listening and speaking your new language. You can practice with classmates, other students studying your target language, native speakers, or our language tutors. While the Center is not able to provide quite study areas we do have many areas available for small group discussion and collaborative learning. Your campus group is also welcome to reserve one of our lab spaces for meetings or activities.

Collaborative Classroom Space

The Language Center has several spaces designed for collaborative teaching and learning. Room 305 is a computer lab and discussion space containing 25 student computing stations. Room 306 is a flexible space partitioned by a sliding wall providing workspaces accommodating 20-45 students. The small group discussion area in Room 306C can be reserved for group discussion, oral practice, or as an open interview space. The video conferencing space in Room 316 seats up to 12 people. It is ideal for video conferencing, discussion groups, small classes and student clubs.

Study Abroad

Use the language skills you have worked so hard to obtain--travel abroad! Ask us about destinations and opportunities for travel and study abroad. We can help you connect with other CSU and campus resources.

All students are welcome to use the Language Center anytime, however priority will be given to students enrolled in foreign language courses.

Foreign Language Tutoring

The Language Center is happy to provide free language tutoring. Meet some of our language tutors:

Hello! My name is Antonina and I will be your tutor for Italian this year! I am an Italian Studies major, and I recently added a minor in Translation Studies. I am passionate about all things Italian, especially Italy's food culture. Some of my hobbies include spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, trying new foods, and traveling. I look forward to sharing my passion for Italian through tutoring and I hope to be a helpful outlet for anyone studying Italian this year!

Hi, I am Jacob Otoo, a second-year master’s student at the department of RGRLL CSULB. As a hardworking teacher, I received the 21st Annual Student Success Award as the best Teaching Associate for the department of RGRLL. Teaching is my passion and I devote much time to help learners of the French language at any level with top-notch methods and activities to facilitate their acquisition of the language. My aim as a teacher is to help students acquire the French language and culture. In doing so, I focus on all the four key competencies of language learning and acquisition.

Hello, my name is Ashley Anderson, I am in the German Studies Master's program and I'm excited to help you with all your German language questions! I am most interested in German literature - Heinrich von Kleist and Kafka are my favorites! I have also had the privilege of studying abroad in Berlin and would love to talk about Berlin culture and the study abroad experience. Outside of classes I enjoy hiking, camping, and going to the beach. I hope to be a helpful resource for anyone struggling with German grammar or anyone who just wants to practice their German conversation skills!

Tutoring, conversation practice, and other language related support is available for ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
