In September, Jeane Relleve Caveness, Student Services, was appointed to a two-year term on the Los Angeles Regional Council for the American Cancer Society.
On April 25, Ralph Davis, Student Health Services, Mike Hostetler, Student Services, and Jeff Klaus, Student Life and Development, participated in a panel discussion, "Building an Effective Campus and Community ATOD Coalition" at the 2008 California Higher Education Prevention Conference. Gene Rotundo, owner of Legends Sports Bar in Long Beach, also served on the panel. The CSU sponsored the event, which was held at a Long Beach hotel and hosted by CSULB.
The 2008 annual western regional conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators was held November 5-8 in Long Beach. Ken Kelly, Student Transition and Retention Services, was chair of the conference planning committee. Other members of the planning committee included Carol Menard Fulthorp, Partners for Success; Jeff Klaus, Student Life and Development; and Jeane Relleve Caveness, Student Services. At the opening session, CSULB President King Alexander welcomed participants to Long Beach. Student Services employees who presented workshop sessions or assisted with the conference were Erin Booth, Jina Lee Flores and Alaine Weiss, Career Development Center; Lorraine D’Abate, Paula Gleason, Mike Hostetler, Allan Kellogg, Linda Prosser and Doug Robinson, Student Services; Tom Malizia, Judicial Affairs; and Margarita Rivera, Upward Bound.
Jeff Klaus, Student Life and Development, completed the 2008 Harvard Management Development Program held June 14-27 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In February, Klaus became a state certified sexual assault crisis intervention advocate/counselor through his volunteer work with the Long Beach Sexual Assault Crisis Agency.
Stewart Ohanesian, Associated Students, Inc., and Joseph Smith, University Student Union, were recognized at the 4th Annual Celebration of Leadership on May 16. Both employees received appreciation awards from Student Life and Development for their outstanding contributions to CSULB students, staff and faculty.
Caitlin Roberts, Student Life and Development, was selected by CAMPUSPEAK to facilitate Greek leadership programs around the country. In this role, Roberts provides custom facilitation services to campuses via standardized CAMPUSPEAK programs such as Recruitment Boot Camp, a Greek recruitment training program; SALAD, a program designed to build community among diverse individuals; and The Intake Equation, a workshop for Black and cultural fraternities and sororities. CAMPUSPEAK is an award-winning agency representing college speakers and offers curriculum development, conferencing and material development.
At the Disabled Resources Center of Long Beach’s 32nd annual awards dinner held June 26, David Sanfilippo, Disabled Student Services, received a civic leadership award for his work assisting students with disabilities. Sanfilippo also was acknowledged for his work as a consultant and grant-writer for Christian and faith-based schools and local service organizations.
