Applying to CSULB
Students may apply to CSULB as freshmen, upper division transfer, or graduate students.

Once you have determined which program you are interested in and qualified for, you may apply during the appropriate application period using CSU Mentor. If you left the service within the last six months, you may be eligible to submit a late application.
You have not taken any college or university courses since graduating from high school.
- You may apply as a freshman. To review the eligibility requirements for admission as a freshman, click here.
- You will be using your high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores as your academic record for the application process.
- As a veteran, you will be considered a "local applicant" regardless of where you graduated from high school. This means that you will be considered for admission based on the published minimum "Eligibility Index" for freshman admissions. Please note: This is not the same as being a California Resident. You have completed one or more college or university courses since graduating from high school.
- You must apply as an upper division transfer student. You must complete 60 transferrable units including courses specified by your chosen major to be eligible for transfer to CSULB. Most student-veterans meet these requirements at local community colleges. To review the eligibility requirements for admission as a transfer student, click here. - You will be using your college or university transcripts as your academic record for the application process. You will not submit high school transcripts, SAT, or ACT scores.
- As a veteran, you will be considered a "local applicant" regardless of where you graduated high school. This means that, except for “Highly Impacted” majors, as a CSU eligible applicant you will be offered admission if you meet the major specific minimum cumulative GPA and required lower division preparation. You have earned a Bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a Master's or Doctoral degree.
- To qualify for admission to a Master’s or Doctoral program, you must meet the general university admission requirements for graduate standing as well as the professional, personal, scholastic and other standards as prescribed by the program. To learn more about graduate admissions, click here.
You previously attended CSULB, but left to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
- If you left CSULB to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces - including the National Guard and Reserves - for a period of more than 30 days, the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 may provide you with the right to readmission to CSULB within three years of exiting the service.
