Parent Support Group
and research suggest that when parents and other adults show an
interest in and support a child's education, the child's chances
for academic success are greatly increased. Parent involvement and
participation educational activities can often be a motivator for
the child. Interest and support can raise his or her academic achievement,
improve attitudes and performance, and foster better communication
The Parent Support Group is composed of Upward Bound staff and all the parents/guardians
of currently enrolled CSULB Upward Bound students. Parents are encouraged
to be active members of Parent Support Group during the academic year and summer
residential program. There are plenty of parent committees
- To support the academic and social policies of the CSULB Upward
- To provide extended services and experiences that
are not readily available through the program, which would be
beneficial to the students.
How does the Parent Support Group operate?
Parent Support Group meetings will be held once a month during the academic
year, September through May; and approximately 3 meetings will
be held during the summer. These meetings will focus on program
updates, as well as planning and implementing activities for the
Parents are asked to contribute a minimum 10 hours of support
services throughout the year.
How can Parent Support Group help Upward Bound?
Parent Support Group members can help the Upward Bound Program by:
- monitoring tutorials
- providing refreshments for meeting
- serving on committees
- providing nutrition snacks for Saturday instruction

Tamale Fundraiser November/December
UB PSG needs help from all parents for our annual Tamale Fundraiser. Please consider volunteering to ask for donations from your local grocery stores, businesses and employers. Help us sell tamales by taking orders from your friends and co-workers, and help us make more than 3,000 tamales on December 8th. Last year, PSG earned more than $2,100 for scholarships and GAME prizes. Let’s make it our goal to make it better this year!
