Meet the Upward Bound Staff

Ms. Hikes comes to us from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. where she directed the Upward Bound program for six years. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in English and Psychology as well as a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania.

For the last six years, Ms. Hikes has been a passionate leader and director, working diligently to help improve the lives of her students.  Education and social justice are cornerstones of her life. She has seen firsthand how the lack of education, exposure to poverty and other forms of injustice often act as barriers to future advancement.

Ms. Hikes loves working with high school students and truly feels there’s no greater joy than screaming and jumping up and down with a student as they receive their first college acceptance letter.  It is her goal here at CSULB Upward Bound to develop new relationships with youth and high schools throughout our target area, connect with students and address their various needs. Ms. Hikes understands the essential need for outreaching and networking with students, parents, mentors and educators affiliated with CSULB and the community.  Additionally, she wants to focus on helping each student recognize the value of his or her contributions and support them in achieving their academic and personal goals.

Hubert graduated from California State University, Northridge twice, once in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and again in 2013 with a master’s degree in higher education. Hubert has a passion for traveling. He has had the opportunity to visit Guatemala, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia and Morocco; he studied abroad in Puerto Rico and taught English in Spain. However, Hubert believes that none of this would have been possible had he not obtained a college education. This is the reason why there is nothing more fulfilling to him than helping first-generation students get admitted into college and graduate. He is eager to get this academic year underway so he can meet each one of you and help you in any way possible.
