Student Life & Development

Student Life and Development (SLD) plays a critical role in student success. Research continually shows students who are engaged with campus life earn higher grades, are more satisfied and are more likely to persist. Student involvement is the laboratory for learning and skill building where students can apply the theories and lessons from the classroom to real world experiences.

Through SLD’s programs and services, students are connected with individuals of other majors, gender, ethnicity and belief systems and they acquire skills for ethical leadership, cultural awareness and positive social change.

No matter what your student’s schedule demands, SLD can find something to fit his or her interest and time constraints. SLD provides the following key programs and services for student leaders and the campus community:

Student Organizations

One of the best ways for students to become engaged is through campus organizations. Student organizations create a dynamic energy on the campus and provide an outlet for involvement and leadership development. With the largest number of student organizations in the CSU system (330), CSULB offers opportunities for students to find their place at The Beach and feel a sense of belonging.

Fraternities and Sororities

With options for cultural and Greek-letter organizations numbering over 30, CSULB’s fraternal and sorority life programs allow for personal and social growth and provide students with networking opportunities. Recruiting is regulated by the university as well as the respective student organizations. Minimum grade requirements are mandatory for all student groups at CSULB.

Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy is a three-part extracurricular, certificate-bearing program composed of workshops, community service and practical application. Workshops focus on cultivating leadership excellence for practical and professional application. The Leadership Academy is open to all CSULB students.

T3, Teamwork, Make A Difference Day & Alternative Spring Break

SLD offers a variety of leadership development opportunities. Some are one-day leadership institutes designed as professional conferences and others are week-long community service activities.
