The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) is available to all students, from those struggling with a class to those who want to maintain straight A’s. Support is provided to students through four core services: Learning Skills and Strategies, Supplemental Instruction, Content Tutoring and ESL Tutoring.
Learning Skills Services help students develop the most effective approaches to mastering the different types of courses they’re taking, based on their personal learning style preferences. Help is offered to individuals and through workshops on specific topics.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) supports students in courses already recognized by the university as especially difficult. SI is delivered two ways: via a one-unit SI class that meets just before or after a specific section, or through groups scheduled at the start of the term, based on the availability of interested students. Regular SI participants average one letter grade higher than others in the same course!
The LAC provides tutoring for all courses taught on campus, using various formats to suit all students’ needs. Led by tutors who are advanced students with proven track records in the subjects, drop-in tutorials allow users to attend as frequently as they wish or need, while individual appointments guarantee weekly help from a tutor who provides them undivided attention for a full hour. There is a modest fee for use of these services, though some special programs cover the cost for their students. Tutoring is also available for non-CSULB students.
The ESL Program tutors individuals who speak English as second language, helping them increase their oral comprehension and their ability to express their ideas more fluently and correctly, both orally and in writing. Help is available in the drop-in Conversation Lab for any student and by appointment in the ESL Specialist tutoring program for Writing Proficiency Exam preparation.
