Associated Students

University Student Union, Rm. 311 (USU-311) • (562) 985-5241 •

When students gain admission to The Beach, they not only become members of a world class university, they also become citizens of a vibrant student community. With a population in excess of 34,000, the student community at CSULB rivals many local municipalities, and throughout its 50 years of existence, has gained a longstanding tradition of self-determination and a genuine voice in the shared governance of the institution.

Central to orchestrating the students’ representation and participation in campus affairs is the Associated Students, Incorporated, or “ASI.” ASI is a nonprofit association of which every student becomes a member upon enrollment in the university. Members of the association annually elect a president, vice president and treasurer, who serve as the executive officers of the corporation, and 20 student senators, who serve as the corporation’s board of directors. Under the guidance of professional staff and university administrators, ASI provides a long list of student programs and services that could not otherwise be provided by the taxpayer-supported university. In addition to serving as the official seat of student government at The Beach, ASI operates the University Student Union, the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, the Recycling Center, the soon-to-be completed Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Long Beach Weekly newspaper, College Beat TV, K-Beach radio, and the Beach Pride Center – home to CSULB’s national championship spirit programs.

Whether by voting in campus elections or by participating in one or more of ASI’s opportunities for campus involvement, students can gain critical life skills, enhance their career preparation, and develop a solid foundation for responsible and productive citizenship in a diverse, democratic society.
