SOAR Information for Freshmen

About SOAR

SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) is a comprehensive orientation program designed to support newly admitted undergraduate students as you transition – both academically and socially – to California State University, Long Beach. All first-time freshmen are required to complete two components of the University-required orientation and advising program:  The Online Pre-SOAR Program and a Freshman One-Day Workshop. Details regarding the online program and freshman workshop will be emailed once you are formally admitted to the University, and have submitted your intent to enroll and Enrollment Deposit.

After completing the Online Pre-SOAR Program, first-time freshmen will participate in a SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop where you will learn about University history & traditions, meet other freshmen, be introduced to campus resources and services, and receive assistance with course selection and registration.

What To Do Before And After Attending Your SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop?

The following is a list of important deadlines and responsibilities all freshmen must complete.

  1. Submit Admitted Student Reply and Enrollment Deposit by Sunday, December 1, 2019, or by the deadline provided by the University. Use your MyCSULB account to accept admission and submit your deposit.
  2. Make Your On-Campus Freshman Workshop Reservation – login to MyCSULB via Single Sign-On. After entering your Beach ID number and password, click on the MyCSULB icon. You will then be directed to your Student Center where you will see the SOAR Sign Up link located under the Admissions section. This is where you can make your workshop reservation. Pay your SOAR fee and any outstanding balances 10 days prior to attending your workshop. The deadline to make your workshop reservation is Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Please contact SOAR if you do not receive an email workshop confirmation within two (2) business days of your scheduled workshop date.
  3. Declare Your Housing Intent visit Housing & Residential Life’s Housing Portal to start your housing application OR file a request to be exempt from the freshman housing requirement.
  4. Need disability-related accommodations? The Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) provides support to students with disabilities through accommodations and services, including but not limited to sign language interpreters, real-time captioners, assistive technology, and alternative media.  If you are a student who has previously utilized disability-related accommodations and/or are in need of these accommodations during your SOAR On-Campus Transfer Workshop or during the school year, please complete the SOAR-BMAC Disability-Related Accommodations Form.  Be sure to submit this online form at least three (3) business days prior to your scheduled workshop.  Once you have submitted this online form, a BMAC representative will reach out to discuss the confidential registration process.  If you have additional questions, please contact BMAC at (562) 985-5401 or
  5. Complete the Online Pre-SOAR Program – starting Wednesday, December 11, access the Online Pre-SOAR Program from your BeachBoard account.  Login to BeachBoard via Single Sign-On by entering your Beach ID number and password, and click on the BeachBoard icon. Under My Courses, click on Online Pre-SOAR Program to get started with the program. Be sure to complete this online program within a week prior to your scheduled on-campus workshop.
  6. Send your final official transcripts to Enrollment Services by the designated deadline. This includes any college credit earned at another university and/or community college.
  7. Bring with you to your On-Campus Freshman Workshop the following items: A photo identification (driver’s license, state-issued ID, passport, high school ID, or community college ID); a copy of AP or IB scores and/or college transcripts; a printed copy of your Online Freshman Advising Survey; and (if possible) a laptop or tablet with Internet capability – you will use this to register for classes.
  8. Pay fees by designated deadline listed on your MyCSULB account.  Fees are due within 24 hours of enrolling in courses. Pay via MyCSULB or visit Enrollment Services for payment options. Students who have accepted a Financial Aid award may have deferred fees.  Please visit the Finances section found in the Student Center page of your MyCSULB account to view your amount due and deadlines. Please note that non-payment may result in being disenrolled from your courses.
  9. Pay for your one-day, virtual parking permit. Visit CSULB Online Parking Services to purchase a virtual permit prior to arriving for your one-day workshop – you will need your Beach ID number, MyCSULB password, your car’s license plate, and your car’s make/model to complete this transaction. If you do not purchase a virtual permit prior to arriving for SOAR, you may purchase a one-day permit at one of the parking pay stations located in parking lots G6 and G4. Please note that you do NOT have to purchase a permit if you are being dropped off or using public transportation.
  10. Update and keep current your contact information on MyCSULB. It is important for you to update your personal telephone numbers and email accounts so that the University can send you notices regarding critical information and upcoming deadlines along with keeping in contact with you in the event that an on-campus emergency occur. Please note the University will send all of its correspondences to your University-assigned email address (
  11. Welcome Back to The Beach...the first day of classes is Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

What Is the Online Pre-SOAR Program and the Freshman One-Day Workshop?

The Online Pre-SOAR Program introduces our campus community and your responsibilities as a community member, as well as resources and services to help you maintain a well-balanced life.  SOAR hopes by presenting these key topics you will have a better understanding of the University’s Inclusive Excellence, expectations of our community members, and how it supports your individual growth.

Details regarding the online program will be emailed once you are formally admitted to the University and have submitted your CSULB Enrollment Deposit.

The SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop provides an orientation to life at The Beach and introduction to University academic requirements.

The workshop is a day-long program that begins at 8:00am and concludes at approximately 5:00pm. You receive some gifts and a lunch with your paid SOAR fee. Here’s what to expect during the On-Campus Freshman Workshop:

  1. Attend a welcome session that introduces Beach traditions, highlights University accomplishments, and presents new student expectations
  2. Receive a SOAR Student Handbook, Beach ID card, and gifts
  3. Take a walking tour that emphasizes buildings and resources specific to your declared major or field of interest
  4. Learn about opportunities to become involved with academic and student clubs/organizations
  5. Become familiar with student support services, programs and resources
  6. Participate in an academic advising session that introduces University policies, procedures, deadlines and responsibilities; presents General Education and major requirements; explains how to use the online advising tools and Schedule of Classes; provides group and one-on-one academic advisement from your assigned college advisors; and assists with selection of first-semester classes
  7. Learn how to use MyCSULB to register for classes
  8. Obtain a printed copy of your class schedule
  9. Activate your Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) membership

When Can I Attend a SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop?

Freshman workshops for those students admitted for Spring 2020 semester. Workshops will be offered in mid-January - see calendar below for specific workshop dates.

The deadline to reserve your space for a SOAR workshop is Tuesday, December 10, 2019.


What Is The Cost?

The cost for the On-Campus Freshman Workshop is $62.  To guarantee your selected workshop date, you must pay at the time you make your SOAR workshop reservation.  Acceptable online forms of payment are e-check (no convenience fee) and credit card (MasterCard, Discover, Visa, or American Express with a 2.75% service charge). 

The SOAR fee is non-refundable, non-transferable, and cannot be waived. If you are unable to pay the SOAR fee at the time you make your workshop reservation, please call (562) 985-5515 or email to explore other payment options.

How Do I Make My SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop Reservation?

The first day to reserve your space for a SOAR Workshop is 9:00amon Tuesday, October 29, 2019. Reservations will continue to be accepted for a particular workshop as long as there is space available. The deadline to reserve your space for a SOAR workshop is Tuesday, December 10, 2019.

Submit your Admitted Student Reply and required Enrollment Deposit by December 1, 2019. Shortly thereafter, you will receive information on how to make your SOAR workshop reservation. Please note that the Enrollment Deposit is separate from the SOAR fee.

Space is limited per workshop date and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Make your SOAR workshop reservation at least three weeks prior to the date you select to receive your workshop confirmation and parking information.

Directions for making your SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop Reservation:

  1. Access the Single Sign On portal to begin the process.
  2. Login to Single Sign On by using your Beach ID number (student ID number) and password.
  3. Select the MyCSULB icon.
  4. You will be directed to your Student Center.
  5. Look under the Admissions section located at the bottom of the page to see SOAR Sign Up – click on this link to view available on-campus workshops, select your preferred on-campus date, and submit your payment.
  6. Be sure to pay your SOAR fees at least 10 days prior to your scheduled on-campus workshop.
