SOAR Information for Freshmen

About SOAR

SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) is a comprehensive orientation program designed to support newly admitted undergraduate students as you transition – both academically and socially – to California State University, Long Beach. All first-time freshmen are required to complete two components of the University-required orientation and advising program:  The Online Pre-SOAR Program and an On-Campus Freshman Workshop. Details regarding the online program and freshman workshop will be emailed once you are formally admitted to the University and have submitted your CSULB Enrollment Deposit.

After competing the Online Pre-SOAR Program, first-time freshmen will participate in an On-Campus Freshman Workshop where you will learn about University history & traditions, meet other freshmen, be introduced to campus resources and services, and receive assistance with course selection and registration.

What To Do Before And After Attending Your SOAR Freshman One-Day Workshop?

The following is a list of important deadlines and responsibilities all freshmen must complete.

  1. Submit Admitted Student Reply and Enrollment Deposit by December 1 or within two weeks of receiving admission to CSULB. Use your MyCSULB account to accept admission and submit your deposit.
  2. Make Your On-Campus Freshman Workshop Reservation – login to MyCSULB via Single Sign-On. After entering your Beach ID number and password, click on the MyCSULB icon. You will then be directed to another link where you can make your workshop reservation. You will receive a confirmation at least two (2) weeks prior to your scheduled workshop. Please contact SOAR if you do not receive an email confirmation within two days of your scheduled workshop.
  3. Declare Your Housing Intent visit Housing & Residential Life’s Housing Portal to start your housing application OR file a request to be exempt from the freshman housing requirement. 
  4. Complete the Online Freshman Advising Survey advisors will need your most current information as it relates to intended major and earned/pending college credits. Visit Online Freshman Advising Survey to get started. All surveys must be received by Friday, January 4, 2019. An electronic copy will be sent to your preferred email once you submit your results. Bring a printed copy of your advising survey results to your on-campus workshop.  
  5. Complete the Online Pre-SOAR Program – starting Monday, December 10, sign in to BeachBoard  via Single Sign-On. After entering your Beach ID number and password, click on the BeachBoard icon. Under My Courses,click on Online Pre-SOAR Program to get started with the program. Be sure to complete this online program within a week prior to your schedule on-campus workshop.
  6. Send your final official transcripts to CSULB's Enrollment Services by the designated deadline. This includes any college credit earned at another university and/or community college.
  7. Bring with you to your On-Campus Freshman Workshop the following items: A photo identification (driver’s license, state-issued ID, passport, high school ID, or community college ID); a copy of AP or IB scores and/or college transcripts; a printed copy of your Online Freshman Advising Survey; and (if possible) a laptop or tablet with Internet capability – you will use this to register for classes.
  8. Pay fees by designated deadline listed on your MyCSULB account.  Pay via MyCSULB or visit Enrollment Services for payment options. Students who have accepted a Financial Aid award may have deferred fees.  Please visit the Finances section found in the Student Center page of your MyCSULB account to view your amount due and deadlines. .
  9. Pay for your one-day, virtual parking permit. Visit CSULB Online Parking Services to purchase a virtual permit prior to arriving for your one-day workshop – you will need your Beach ID number, MyCSULB password, your car’s license plate, and your car’s make/model to complete this transaction. If you do not purchase a virtual permit prior to arriving for SOAR, you may purchase a one-day permit at one of the parking pay stations located in parking lots G6 and G4.
  10. Update and keep current your contact information on MyCSULB. It is important for you to update your personal telephone numbers and email accounts so that CSULB can send you notices regarding critical information and upcoming deadlines along with keeping in contact with you in the event that an on-campus emergency occur. Please note the University will send all of its correspondences to your University-assigned email address (@csulb.edu).
  11. Welcome Back to The Beach...the first day of classes is Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

What Is the Online Pre-SOAR Program and the On-Campus Freshman Workshop?

The Online Pre-SOAR Program introduces our campus community and your responsibilities as a community member, as well as resources and services to help you maintain a well-balanced life.  SOAR hopes by presenting these key topics you will have a better understanding of the University’s Inclusive Excellence, expectations of our community members, and how it supports your individual growth.

Details regarding the online program will be emailed once you are formally admitted to the University and have submitted your CSULB Enrollment Deposit.

The On-Campus Freshman Workshop provides an orientation to life at The Beach and introduction to University academic requirements.

The workshop is a day-long program that begins at 8:00am and concludes at approximately 5:00pm. You receive some gifts and a lunch with your paid SOAR fee. Here’s what to expect during the On-Campus Freshman Workshop:

  1. Attend a welcome session that introduces 49er traditions, highlights University accomplishments, and presents new student expectations
  2. Receive a SOAR Student Handbook, Beach ID card, and gifts
  3. Take a walking tour that emphasizes buildings and resources specific to your declared major
  4. Learn about opportunities to become involved with academic and student clubs/organizations
  5. Become familiar with student support services, programs and resources
  6. Participate in an academic advising session that introduces University policies, procedures, deadlines and responsibilities; presents General Education and major requirements; explains how to use the online advising tools and Schedule of Classes; provides group and one-on-one academic advisement from your assigned college advisors; and assists with selection of first-semester classes
  7. Learn how to use MyCSULB to register for classes
  8. Obtain a printed copy of your class schedule
  9. Activate your Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) membership.

When Can I Attend a On-Campus Freshman Workshop?

What Is The Cost?

The cost for the On-Campus Freshman Workshop is $62.  To guarantee your selected workshop date, you must pay at the time you make SOAR workshop reservation.  Acceptable online forms of payment are e-check (no convenience fee) and credit card (MasterCard, Discover, Visa, or American Express with a 2.75% service charge). 

The SOAR fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. If you have any questions or concerns about the SOAR fee, please call (562) 985-5515 or email soar@csulb.edu.

How Do I Make My On-Campus Freshman Workshop Reservation?

The first day to reserve your space for a SOAR Workshop is 9am on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Reservations will continue to be accepted for a particular workshops as long as there is space available. The deadline to reserve your space for a SOAR workshop is Monday, December 10, 2018.

Submit your Admitted Student Reply and required Enrollment Deposit prior to signing up for SOAR. Please note that the Enrollment Deposit is separate from the SOAR fee.

Space is limited per workshop date and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Make your SOAR workshop reservation at least three weeks prior to the date you select to receive your workshop confirmation and parking information.

Directions for making your SOAR On-Campus Freshman Workshop Reservation:

  1. Visit CSULB's Single Sign On web page to begin the process.
  2. Login to Single Sign On by using your Beach ID number (student ID number) and password.
  3. Select the MyCSULB icon.
  4. Look under the My Menu header on the left side to see Student Center – click on this link.
  5. Look under the Admissions section located at the bottom of the page to see SOAR Sign Up – click on this link to view available on-campus workshops, select your preferred on-campus date, and submit your payment.
  6. Be sure to pay your SOAR fees at least 10 days prior to your scheduled on-campus workshop.
  7. If you have any problems accessing Single Sign On or MyCSULB, contact the Technology Service Desk at (562) 985-4959 or helpdesk@csulb.edu.
