SOAR Overview

SOAR assists newly admitted students as you begin your transition to life as a college student at California State University, Long Beach. All students are required to complete two components of the University-required orientation and advising program:  An Online Pre-SOAR Program and a SOAR On-Campus Workshop.

The Online Pre-SOAR Program introduces our campus community and your responsibilities as a community member, as well as resources and services to help you maintain a well-balanced life.  SOAR hopes by presenting these key topics you will have a better understanding of the University’s inclusive excellence, expectations of its community members, and how it supports your individual growth.

The SOAR On-Campus Workshop begins with a tour that helps you become more familiar with the campus, learn about opportunities to enhance your college experience and successfully navigate through your first semester at The Beach. Additionally, SOAR participants are introduced to their department/major requirements, provided an overview of General Education, and assisted with selecting and registering for your first semester courses. Throughout the day, SOAR Advisors, who are current CSULB students, lead and support you through each component of the day as well as facilitate connections between students.

Transfer Students

After competing the Online Pre-SOAR Program, most transfer students will participate in a college-specific workshop where you will meet with faculty advisors from your declared major department. You will also receive information on the topics of department-sponsored support resources, scholarships, internships/field work, and out-of-classroom requirements. View SOAR Information for Transfers.

First-time Freshmen

After making a SOAR Freshman Campus Experience reservation, freshmen must complete the Online Freshman Advising Survey which asks about earned/pending college credit and confirms your intended major. You will then complete Online Pre-SOAR Program. Next, you will participate in a SOAR Freshman Experience: Either a One-Day Freshman Workshop or the Freshman Overnight program.  One-Day Freshman Workshops (offered to Fall and Spring Admits) jump right into the essential components of SOAR – campus tour, academic advising, and assistance with class selection and registration.  Offered in the summer for Fall Admits only, The Freshman Overnight Program enables you to experience the residence halls and establish new friendships with other incoming freshmen.  During the first day of this program, educational and social activities introduce freshmen to college life/issues and the CSULB campus. The second day is dedicated to academic advising, class selection and assistance with the registration process. View SOAR Information for Freshman.

Information for Parents, Guardians, Family Members & Friends

As our Guest Attendance Policy states, SOAR is for registered student participants only. We cannot accommodate guests in the workshops.

If you are interested in learning more about CSULB, we strongly encourage family members and guests to register for and attend CSULB's Parent and Family Orientation (PFO) program. This University-sponsored program, which is hosted by the department of Parent and Family Programs and the Division of Student Affairs, provides an overview of academic requirements and campus resources, as well as an introduction to campus life. This program is offered only during summer SOAR (for Fall Admits) only.
