  1. What is SOAR?
    SOAR stands for Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration. It is the University’s comprehensive orientation program intended to ensure a smooth transition for first-semester freshmen and transfer students to California State University, Long Beach. All newly admitted students are required to complete an Online Pre-SOAR Program AND attend a SOAR On-Campus Workshop.
  2. Do I have to attend SOAR?
    Yes. All first-semester freshmen and transfer students are required to complete the Online Pre-SOAR Program AND attend an On-Campus SOAR Workshop. Additionally, certain majors or programs may also sponsor a mandatory orientation for new students. Read all University messages carefully and adhere to department/major regulations as your attendance at SOAR is a separate requirement. Please note that all University correspondences will be sent to your assigned university email account (@student.csulb.edu).
  3. Who is eligible to attend a SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    First-semester freshmen and transfer students are required to attend SOAR. Graduate and post-baccalaureate students are neither required nor eligible to attend SOAR.
  4. When will I receive information about SOAR?
    You will first learn about SOAR when you receive your University Admission email. After submitting your Admitted Student Reply Form and Enrollment Deposit, the next communication from the University will include information about SOAR's online program and on-campus workshop. Additional information including login directions and deadlines will be emailed as part of a sequence of University communications.
  5. What is a MyCSULB account?
    MyCSULB is a self-service, online account that all students can access. You can view your personal information (e.g.: e-mail address, phone number, address), academic record (e.g.: test scores & grades), finances (e.g.: outstanding balances) and much, much more! Login to MyCSULB via the University's Single Sign On portal, then click on the MyCSULB icon. If you have any problems accessing Single Sign On or MyCSULB, contact the Technology Help Desk at (562) 985-4959 or helpdesk@csulb.edu.
  6. How do I make my SOAR On-Campus Workshop Reservation?
    You must first submit your Admitted Student Reply Form and Enrollment Deposit prior to making a SOAR On-Campus Workshop Reservation. Once those are submitted, reserve your on-campus workshop by following these steps:
    (1) Use the University's Single Sign On portal to begin the process;
    (2) Login to Single Sign On by using your Beach ID number (student ID number) and password;
    (3) Select the MyCSULB icon; and
    (4) On the Student Center page, scroll all the way down and click on the SOAR link. Further instructions will be provided to reserve your space.
    The deadline to make a SOAR On-Campus Workshop reservation is Tuesday, December 10. 2019.
  7. When can I make my SOAR On-Campus Workshop reservation?
    You can make your SOAR workshop reservation beginning at 9:00am on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. The deadline to make your reservation is Tuesday, December 10, 2019.
  8. How much does it cost to attend a SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    There is a required $62 SOAR fee to attend a workshop.
  9. What does the SOAR fee cover?
    The fee covers all services and materials provided during the workshop. Items provided include a SOAR Student Handbook, Long Beach State gifts, University publications, and lunch.
  10. Does my financial aid award cover my SOAR fee?
    Unfortunately, no.
    Is there a fee waiver for the SOAR fee?
    Unfortunately, no. Please contact SOAR to explore you options for paying the SOAR fee.
  11. How soon after making my SOAR On-Campus Workshop Reservation will I receive a SOAR Confirmation email?
    Confirmation emails are generated by Enrollment Services on a regular basis. You should receive it approximately two weeks prior to your reserved SOAR Workshop date. If you reserved your workshop space and do not receive this email two (2) business days prior to your workshop date, please contact SOAR at (562) 985-5515.
  12. What is the Online Pre-SOAR Program?
    The Online Pre-SOAR Program introduces our campus community and your responsibilities as a community member, as well as resources designed to help you maintain a well-balanced life. After submitting your Admitted Student Reply Form and Enrollment Deposit, you will receive an email with additional information about this requirement.
  13. TRANSERS STUDENTS: Do I need my final transcripts at SOAR?
    No, final transcripts are not required to attend SOAR. Transfer students are instructed via their SOAR Confirmation email to bring an unofficial copy or have electronic access of their transcripts to their workshop to assist with course placement. All students (freshmen and transfer students) are notified about the final transcript deadline by the University, and it is also posted on their Student Center found in MyCSULB.
  14. Can I get a refund for this program?
    The SOAR fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  15. Can parents/guests attend SOAR?
    SOAR On-Campus Workshops are for registered student participants only - SOAR cannot accommodate guests in workshop classrooms.
  16. What takes place during the SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    First-semester students take part in a campus tour, participate in interactive activities where you will meet other first-semester students, and receive an overview of how to become involved with campus life. Information regarding major and General Education requirements, along with University protocol and policies are also introduced during your advising presentation. You will register for classes after participating in an advising presentation led by your assigned academic advising center staff.
  17. How do I know which college my major belongs to?
    Visit Colleges & Majors to view a listing of all undergraduate majors.
  18. Can I change my SOAR On-Campus Workshop date after making my reservation?
    You will need to be certain of the SOAR workshop you pick during the online SOAR Workshop Reservation process. The system will not allow you to change dates once you select the Confirm SignUp button. If you are unable to attend your reserved SOAR workshop due to extenuating circumstances, please contact SOAR (562/985.5515 or soar@csulb.edu) for assistance.
  19. I already attended a SOAR On-Campus Workshop in the past but ended up not attending or left the University. Now I’m back this upcoming semester. Do I need to attend orientation again?
    If you have previously attended the University and are resuming your studies, you may be required to attend SOAR. Students who have been away from the University for more than two (2) years will be required to attend the new student orientation and advising workshop because of the changes to General Education, major requirements, and CSULB policies.
    If you have been away from CSULB for less than two (2) years, you may voluntarily participate in SOAR to become re-acquainted with the University. If you completed SOAR and attended CSULB within the past two (2) years you may request to be exempt from attending a second workshop by contacting SOAR at (562) 985-5515 or soar@csulb.edu to begin the exemption process.
    *Please note that students who have been away from CSULB less than two (2) years will be required to attend SOAR if significant changes to General Education and/or major requirements occur. 
  20. What should I bring to my SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    You should have access to your SOAR Confirmation Email, as well as bring a photo ID card (driver's license, high school/community college ID, passport), documents verifying college credit (unofficial transcripts and AP/IB exam results) and placement results (ALEKS Math/Chemistry scores). Refer to your SOAR Confirmation Email for a complete list of what to bring. We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes for the walking tour. You may also visit the SOAR web page Preparing for SOAR that includes additional helpful information as you prepare to attend your orientation workshop.
  21. Where & what time do I check-in for my SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    The SOAR On-Campus Freshman Workshop and all Transfer Workshops are a day-long program that begins at 8:00am and concludes at approximately 5:00pm - see your SOAR Workshop Confirmation for details. If you do not received this email in a timely manner, please check your Junk Folder as sometimes it is accidentally re-directed there. Still cannot find it? Contact SOAR (soar@csulb.edu) at least two (2) business days prior to your scheduled workshop so we can re-send the confirmation email to you.
  22. Where do I park when I attend my SOAR On-Campus Workshop?
    You will need to park in the student lot designated for SOAR participants. Please refer to your SOAR Confirmation email, which explains how to purchase your virtual permit before attending SOAR. Please note that you will not have to purchase a one-day permit if you are being dropped off at campus or arriving via public transportation.
  23. Who do I talk to if I need special accommodations due to a disability?
    Students in need of special accommodations due to a disability should contact Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) at (562) 985-5401 at least two (2) weeks prior to your scheduled workshop.
  24. If I can’t make my scheduled SOAR On-Campus Workshop date and have already paid, can I just show up to one that works with my schedule?
    No. We can only accommodate and assist those who we are expecting for the day. Space is limited. If you need to re-schedule your workshop date, please contact us at (562) 985-5515.
  25. When do I need to pay my course/tuition fees?
    Course fees should be paid within 24 hours of registering for your Spring 2020 classes. Failure to pay your fees by the payment due date will result in cancellation of your class schedule unless you have a fee deferment in anticipation of a financial aid award.
  26. How do I get my Beach ID?
    While at SOAR, you will have the opportunity to visit ID Card Services to have your photo taken and receive your Beach Identification (ID) Card. Be sure to bring your driver’s license, state issued ID, high school ID, community college ID, or passport to obtain your Beach ID.
  27. How can I get a semester parking permit?
    Non-transferable, virtual student permits can be purchased online via the Online Parking Services portal.
  28. How do I find off-campus housing?
    The City of Long Beach offers a variety of housing options from apartments, condos, room, and houses. The University’s Housing and Residential Life maintains a computerized database that allows students to search for housing vacancies based on the type of housing (apartment, condo, single room, etc.) and location.
  29. How can I find a job?
    There are many on-campus and off-campus job opportunities for CSULB students. Career LINK provides students with the ability to search and apply for full-time and part-time jobs, internships and on-campus interview opportunities. The University Student Union (USU) offers on-campus paid, work study, and volunteer employment opportunities. University Outreach and School Relations provides opportunities to work on behalf of CSULB as a campus tour guide, outreach specialist, and publication editor - call (562) 985-5358 to inquire.
