1966 until 1990.

John W. 'Jack' Shainline

On November 29, campus colleague and friend John W. “Jack” Shainline, who served as CSULB’s vice president for student services from 1971 to 1990, passed away at the age of 91.

Shainline graduated from Norristown High School in 1940 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1978. After serving in WWII as a Marine, he graduated from Gettysburg College in 1948. Next, he worked as a football and wrestling coach at Gettysburg College before taking on administrative responsibilities. In 1966 he moved to California, where he met his loving and devoted wife, Connie, and began working at CSULB.

CSULB benefited greatly from Shainline’s leadership. He began his CSULB service as assistant dean and dean of students. As vice president for student services, Shainline’s leadership and vision for the campus had a great impact on many areas, including Housing and Residential Life, Disabled Student Services and Veterans Services. In 1989, Shainline traveled back to Gettysburg College, where he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service. Following retirement, Shainline worked as a field representative for U.S. Congressman and former CSULB president Stephen Horn.

A celebration of his life was held for campus community, friends and family on January 17.

Iam proud to present this issue of In Touch as the new senior editor. I assumed the responsibility from retiree Paula Gleason, former senior editor and director of administrative services, who coordinated all previous issues of In Touch from the very first four-page, two-color newsletter in 1992 to the 24-page, full-color publication that has evolved. After my initial panic of how I would maintain the high standards of In Touch, I came to appreciate that this publication is a team effort of the Student Services managers and staff. While working on this issue, I learned a tremendous amount about the high quality, innovative programs and services provided to CSULB’s students and the university community by this division.

I hope you enjoy this issue and, as you read through these pages, I hope you learn something new about the Division of Student Services and how the division continually strives to improve student success at The Beach.
