Frequently Asked Questions About Applying for Housing
To be considered for University Housing for an academic year, all students must submit an online application by using the CSULB Housing Portal. Housing spaces are filled on a date priority basis.
- Academic Year 2020-21
All applicants (new and returning students) opens April 1st at 10 am.
Initial Deadline by May 1st, 5PM.
- Spring 2021
For New Applicants opens November 12, 2020, at 10 AM.
Application takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Due to high demand, the application portal may not be available on your first attempt. We recommend checking back until you can apply.
The license service fee is $275 and is NON-REFUNDABLE. Be sure that you submit a completed License Agreement (signed with payment) before the deadline date. Unfortunately, License Agreements that are received without a paid service fee will be considered 'incomplete' and will not be processed. The service fee is credited toward your total cost and is not a deposit.
You can pay online through the CSULB Housing Portal's secure payment system or send in a personal or cashier's check. Money Orders are not accepted. Make checks payable to CSULB. Postmarks will not be honored. Be sure to include your name and campus I.D. number on all correspondence, on each check, and the service fee payment card. Mail payment to:

You can check your application status online by logging on to the CSULB Housing Portal. You will not be contacted by the Housing Office regarding your status. If you have been confirmed for housing, information will be sent to you using your preferred email address, until campus switches it to your CSULB student email. This information will include the dates to log on to the Housing Portal for roommate and room selection. If you are on the paid wait list, we are not able to predict how quickly or slowly the paid waiting list may change; it all depends on the number of cancellations we receive throughout the summer and fall. Check the CSULB Housing Portal often for updates to your status. You must cancel your housing application using the CSULB Housing Portal should you decide you no longer need University housing.
Applicants will be informed by email after the initial deadline. Applicants can check their application status on the CSULB Housing Portal. Keep checking your status as applicants will be confirmed throughout the summer months. Please note: a signed housing license does not mean you have been offered a space.
NEW APPLICANTS: we anticipate letting students know their status of confirmation or waitlisted within the first few days of May.
CURRENT/RETURNING RESIDENTS: will be notified a week after the priority deadline stated on the application.
While we do not guarantee housing for anyone, first time freshman are required to go to the Housing Portal to either apply for Housing or inform us of their housing intention.

Important information about cancelling
- YOU MUST cancel your license agreement online through the Housing Portal.
- Stop payment on checks or cancelling with university admissions does not cancel your housing agreement. (This includes denied admission; choosing not to attend CSULB, finding off campus housing, or etc.)
Once you have been notified that you are on a waitlist, you can call or email us to get updates on your number.
We keep two lists - a first-time student list and a returning waitlist. First time applicants have priority over returners.
- Yes, if you cancel while on the waitlist your service fee is refundable.
- If you have been offered a bed space, your service fee is non-refundable
- If you paid online, the processing fees are non-refundable
- Be sure to cancel through the Housing Portal for any reason (including denied admission), even if you have already cancelled with the Admission or Enrollment Services Office
- Remember if you want to cancel your housing application you need log on to the CSULB Housing Portal.
- Academic Year 2019-20
Part of Phase 2 of the application process will be requesting a roommate and room. Specific dates are noted in the application.
- Spring 2019
All roommate and room assignments will be done by Housing Office personnel, based upon your preferences that you've submitted as part of your application.
We try to honor the highest Residential College preference based on availability. If you wish to change your Residential College preferences, log back in to the Housing portal and update your preferences before the initial set deadline.
