About the Week

In collaboration with our campus partners, Housing and Residential Life has planned activities, workshops, and events that will prepare you for your residential life experience and equip you with the tools for academic success.

How to Prepare for the Week?

If you are 18 and over, please complete this Waiver by August 14, 2019.

If you are under 18 years old on or after August 21, 2019 please complete this Waiver by August 14, 2019.

Schedule

  • First time freshman and new transfer student move-in
    • Time: 8:00am-12pm
    • Location: Each Residential Building
  • Housing & Residential Life: Parent & Family Orientation (Optional)
    • Time: 10:30am or 1:00pm
    • Location: The Pointe
  • Beach Bash: Residents and their families have an opportunity to go to the bookstore to win prizes and purchase supplies. Additionally, there will be campus partners that will be tabling to provide information on their services.
    • Time: 11:00am-4:00pm
    • Location: Bookstore
  • Mandatory Building Meetings and Activity: Resident Assistants will communicate important information regarding Housing & Residential Life policies and procedures, upcoming events (such as Beach Days), to serve as a point of contact for questions and concerns, and to welcome new and returning residents for a new school year.
    • Time: 6:00pm
    • Location: Individual buildings/floors/wings
  • Academic Day (Mandatory): All first-year residents (freshmen and transfer) to have an opportunity to connect with their colleges after SOAR, learn more about their specific academic colleges (requirements, courses, etc.), and gather information pertaining to the transition into college. The past two years have been extremely successful, and we are hoping to continue this collaboration.
    • Time: 9:00am-12:00pm
    • Location: See RAs and flyers in the residential halls for specific walk-over times
  • Transfer Workshops (Mandatory): The workshops will be organized as a conference style workshop where they can pick which event they would like to attend.
    • Time: 9:00am-2:00pm
    • Location: Beachside College
  • Transfer Luncheon: Campus Partners will be joining residents to build rapport and offer information about their services and how they cater to transfer students.
    • Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm
    • Location: Beachside Dining Hall
  • Wellness 101 Activity (Mandatory for all residents): Residents will become familiar with the ATOD policy and promote the services on the campus that contribute to overall health and wellness.
    • Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm
    • Location: See RAs for specific walk-over times
  • Illumination: An event created and led by the Residence Hall Association, will help residents gain social confidence and exploring identity while creating the one-on-one connections and building community amongst people outside of their own building and/or residential college.
    • Time: 7:00pm-11:00pm
    • Location: The Pointe
  • Returning resident move-in
    • Residents please check your email for information regarding your specific move-in time
  • Parkside Party (Required for Parkside residents only): This event will build community and encourage diverse interactions among residents.
    • Time: 1:00pm
    • Location: Parkside Pathway
  • Hillside Hangout (For Hillside residents only): This event will provide an opportunity for Hillside residents to meet other residents in the community and learn about participating in Resident College Council.
    • Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm
    • Location: Lawn by C Building
  • Honors House Kickoff (Required for Honors House Residents): Resident Assistants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community as a whole, share details about the Beach Express, and lead a group activity. Honors House residents will meet our campus partner from Long Beach Farms and be introduced to our food access and youth in need theme. It will serve as a foundation to the Honors House Civic Engagement and they will have an overview of their involvement for the year and expectations. Lastly, residents will have the opportunity to plant seeds from Long Beach Farms to inspire them to think about food access in a community and sustainable planting.

  • Beachside Pool Party (For Beachside Residents only): This event will promote community engagement at Beachside College.
    • Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm
    • Location: Beachside Pool
  • Smorgasport Kickoff (T-shirt and wrist band distribution): Residents will have an opportunity to sign the Smorgasport waiver, pick-up their wrist band, and if they are one of the first 100 residents in their college, get a free Smorgasport t-shirt.
    • Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm
    • Location: Outside all three service centers

  • Smorgasport: This campus-wide event is an annual end of summer blowout celebration!
    • Time: 7:00pm-11:00pm
    • Location: See Marketing and signage
  • Relax, Rejuvenate & Revitalize @ the Rec: This event aims at promoting holistic wellness for the residents and providing strategies for them to stay healthy throughout the year. This event will showcase all of the services available for students at the Recreation Center.
    • Time: 9:00am-2:00pm
    • Location: Student Recreation and Wellness Center
    *Free Lunch will be served
  • I-House Kickoff: At this event, residents will be engaged through an educational cooking activity, showcasing foods from different regions in the United States and the world. Faculty-in-Residence will host a booth by explaining the historical and cultural significance of a meal, demonstrate or instruct students how to make the meal, and students will have the opportunity to taste the food. After students taste the food, a discussion on diversity, food, and culture will be facilitated.
    • Time: 3:00pm-6:00pm
    • Location: I-House Backyard
  • Multicultural & LGBTQIA+ House Kickoff: This event will kick-off the year for residents where they will learn about the house they signed up to live in and explore their personal identities.
    • Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm
    • Location: Hillside Patio
  • Paint n' Sip: This event will create community and lasting friendships by following a video projected to help residents. Light refreshments will be provided by Housing & Residential Life.
    • Time: 6:00pm or 8:00pm
    • Location: Los Cerritos, the Pointe, Beachside MPR
  • Play at the Pike: Residents will have the opportunity to visit the greater Long Beach area to familiarize themselves with the Long Beach Pike, Aquarium, and local stores and restaurants.
    • Time: 10:00am-5:00pm
    • Location: See RAs for shuttle times
  • Beach Battle Kickoff: This event will promote friendly competition amongst the residential colleges and increase college pride.
    • Time: 5:00pm-6:00pm
    • Location: Outside Each Service Center
  • LBSU vs. UCLA: Women's soccer game: Residents will have the opportunity to build community with others in support to their fellow peers. The event will help residents develop a sense of pride through the sportsmanship of the CSULB soccer team.
    • Time: 6:00pm-10:00pm
    • Location: George Allen Field
