Disability Information and Teaching Strategies

On the CSULB campus, Disabled Student Services (DSS) provides support services for students with deaf or hearing impairments, communication disabilities, learning disabilities, visual limitations, mobility limitations and other functional disabilities. Prior to a student receiving assistance, documentation from a qualified professional source must be submitted to DSS.

Students eligible to receive support services from the DSS office will present a DSS Student/ Teacher Testing Agreement Form to each professor. Professors are encouraged to contact the DSS office with specific questions or concerns.

Typical accommodations may include:

  • Use of a Sign Language Interpreter or Real-Time Captioner for in classroom and campus events
  • Extended Time / Alternate Location -for test taking
  • Testing Accommodations - taped tests, reading of tests, use of computer for word processing or speech access, or use of calculator
  • Tutoring - through the Learning Assistance Center
  • Computer Assistance - adaptive equipment and training via AIM Center
  • Alternative Media Formats - instructional materials transcribed from print media to Braille
  • Reader Services - textbooks on tape
  • Note-taking Services
  • Tape Recording of Lectures
  • Use of Colored Overlays

Many students are more comfortable about approaching their instructor if the following statement is a part of the faculty member's syllabus:

"Any student who feels that he or she may need an accommodation for any sort of disability, please make an appointment to see me during my office hours."
