Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students and we believe your participation plays a very significant role in creating that safety net to prevent suicide on our campus. We would like to offer QPR training to CSULB students, peer educators, student assistants, staff, and faculty. After your completion of QPR, you will be certified as a QPR Gatekeeper for 3 years; something distinct that you can add to your resume!

Project OCEAN is looking for students to share a true story of how he/she overcame a challenging time or event in his/her life.

We need original, thoughtful, and provocative student voices to respond and expand on the following questions:

1) What was/were the challenge(s) you faced?

2) What were the things you did to cope with it? Who helped support you? What resources did you use?

3) Any personal strengths helped you overcome the challenge(s) faced?

4) Anything you learned about yourself through this trial?

5) What personal advice(s) would you like to share with someone who may be going through something similar?

1. Write a meaningful well-written essay sharing your personal story. Have your thoughts organized, check for correct spelling and punctuation, use the standard 12-point font size with double-spacing, and make sure to keep your essay between 750 - 1500 words.

2. Include the following information on a separate page or in the body of your email and separate from the essay: Your full name, student ID #, email address, mailing address, phone number, major, and current year.

There is going to be a live DJ and de-stressing activities: FREE Zumba lesson by Dalia Kamar at 12:30-1p, make-your-own button and stress ball, bubble wrap popping, finger painting, and a picture taking station. Come and 'Check Yourself' out at The Beach!

Send Silence Packing event 2011

Send Silence Packing is an exhibit of 1,100 backpacks representing the 1,100 college students lost to suicide each year. Active Minds Inc. continues to collect backpacks and personal stories from families and friends whose lives have been touched by suicide. By displaying backpacks with personal stories that put a face to statistics, Send Silence Packing carries the message that preventing suicide is not just about lowering numbers, but also about saving the lives of students, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters and friends across the nation. We each have a part to play. By learning more about college student suicide, speaking out, and changing the conversation about mental health from one dominated by stigma and ignorance to one of support and understanding, we can all save lives.


How you can participate:

If you would like to design a backpack  on your own, or on behalf of your department, club, or organization to   be displayed on the day of the event, please turn the backpack in to Brotman Hall 226 no later than Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 5pm.   

How you can volunteer:

Need service hours?? We are also currently looking for volunteers on the day of the event. We have 2-hr shifts available, but it would be very wonderful if you are able to sign up for more than one shift. The hours are 8am-10am, 10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, 2pm-4pm, and 4pm-6pm. Food and a t-shirt will be provided. We need volunteers to assist w/ set-up, take down, running the display, handing out flyers, educating students, recruiting students to view the display, and others things we may need help w/. Into the Fire

Into the Fire is an exploration of our returning vets with disabilities and combat related trauma and their stories as they integrate into their families, communities, educational institutions and the workforce. The actor/playwrights will recreate the stories of both male and female Veterans who have returned from Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. The audience will meet people who will elicit a wide variety of emotional responses and thoughts designed to create awareness, empathy, and new ways to respond to veterans as they rejoin our workforce and communities. Stay until the end for raffle prizes and giveaways!

Live Your Life Day

In an effort to promote mental health on campus, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Live Your Life Day, which will be centered around mental and physical wellness, de-stigmatizing disabilities and help-seeking, and encourage flourishing in all aspects of one's life. This day will feature a resource fair with on and off campus organizations, performances by clubs on campus, t-shirt and giveaways, a photo booth, a music lounge, yoga classes, and snack area.
