Long Beach Cal-SOAP
The California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) was established by the state legislature in 1978 to improve the flow of information about postsecondary education and financial aid while raising the achievement levels of students who were historically underrepresented in post-secondary education. Today, there are 15 Cal-SOAP projects that bring together California school districts, public and private colleges and universities, community-based organizations and private sector partners to form a consortium.
Since 2004, the Long Beach Cal-SOAP Consortium, working under the direction of the California Student Aid Commission, has provided students within the Long Beach, Lynwood, Compton, and Whittier regions, the information and services necessary to prepare for and gain admission to colleges and universities. .
Goals and Objectives
- Increase the availability of information to students about post-secondary education, financial aid, and career opportunities.
- Improve students’ access to higher education by raising their achievement levels.
- Reduce the duplication of services by coordinating outreach efforts among local school districts, public and private higher education institutions, and community organizations.
