Academic Probation

CSULB expects all undergraduate students to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in all classes taken at CSULB and in all transferable courses from other colleges and universities.

Academic probation results when students' grades fall below a 2.0 GPA in either the CSULB cumulative GPA (all courses at CSULB) or in the overall cumulative GPA (all transferable college courses, including CSULB work).

Students placed on probation are given a semester to improve their GPAs to a 2.0 and return to good academic standing. Students are subject to academic disqualification at the end of the first semester on academic probation if they have GPAs below the four minimum cumulative (CUM) GPAs as follows:

Units Completed Cumulative GPA
Freshman (fewer than 30 units completed) 1.5 GPA
Sophomore (30 - 59 units completed 1.7 GPA
Junior (60 - 89 units completed) 1.85 GPA
Senior (90 + units completed) 1.95 GPA

Students whose CSULB and overall GPAs are higher than those listed above but still below 2.0 will earn a second semester on academic probation and must improve their GPAs to a 2.0 and return to good academic standing to avoid academic disqualification.

Enrollment Services informs students via email about their academic standing. As always, it is extremely important that students keep their email address on "My CSULB" current and check their email regularly.

Strategies for Academic Success Workshops

It is strongly recommended that students placed on academic probation attend a Strategies for Academic Success workshop as quickly as possible. These special workshops include information about:

  • University policies and procedures
  • Reasons why students encounter academic problems
  • Strategies for improving GPAs and
  • Information on campus services and offices.

All workshops last two hours and are held in the University Center for Undergraduate Advising, located in the Horn Center, room 103. Check-in begins 10 minutes before the workshop starts. Participants may not enter the workshop late.

How to Register for a Workshop

Registration becomes available one month prior to the workshop date.  Students may then call the UCUA at (562) 985-4837 or use the Advisor Connect button (at the top right of the UCUA home page) to register. 

What to Bring to the Workshop

Please bring the following to the workshop:

  • Your laptop or a hard copy/print out from MyCSULB of:
    • A copy of your unofficial transcript,
    • Your degree progress report, also known as Academic Requirements Report. When printing the Academic Requirements Report, click on "Expand All," then click on "Printer Friendly" version.
  • Paper and pen.
