- First-place winners in each category will receive $100
- Up to 10 students will be selected from among the first and second-place winners to compete in the 30th Annual CSU Statewide Student Research Competition which will be held at Cal State Bakersfield on April 29-30, 2016
About the Competition
On Friday, February 19, 2016, California State University, Long Beach will hold its 28th Annual Student Research Competition in the College of Business Administration's classrooms. The purpose is to showcase excellence in scholarly research and creative activity conducted by CSULB undergraduate and graduate students in the full range of academic programs offered by CSULB.
This is a student academic conference featuring oral presentations to an audience of fellow students and a jury of distinguished faculty. Students with the best presentations in each category will win cash prizes ($100 for first place winners, generously funded by the President's office), certificates, and an impressive entry for their resumes.
There is no registration fee for participating in either the campus or statewide competition.
An Awards Reception for all participants, faculty mentors, and jurors will follow immediately after (Anatol Center: AS-119) when the winners will be announced.

How to Enter
- To participate in the campus competition, students must be enrolled at CSULB either for the Fall 2015 or Spring 2016 semester and must be nominated by a faculty member.
- Download the Registration Form , print out a copy, complete and submit it with 1 physical copy of your paper summary, and 1 electronic paper copy. Electronic copies must be emailed to email@example.com.
- Registration Form and paper summary (1 physical and 1 electronic copy) are due in the Academic Events Office (Academic Services building, room 124) by Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 12:00 PM . Late entries WILL NOT be accepted. Electronic copies must be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Group paper summary must include ALL the students names along with the title of the presentation.
The paper summary should not exceed five (5) double-spaced pages in length, not including appendices.
Appendices (bibliography, graphs, photographs, or other supplementary materials) should not exceed three (3) pages.
- A student may submit a paper on any academic topic, provided that the student has not previously submitted the same paper to this competition.
- Entrants in the Creative Arts and Design category may enter an audio and/or visual record of a performance they have given or work of art they have created, provided they focus their papers and oral presentations on the historical or cultural context and rationale underlying their interpretation of the subject matter involved.
- Supporting audio-visual materials are encouraged in all categories, but please note that equipment needs must then be identified on the Registration Form so that the presentation rooms may be properly equipped.
The format, in short, is intended to resemble a professional academic meeting and exactly replicates the setting of the statewide competition. Jurors will evaluate the:
- Clarity of purpose in each paper submitted (15%)
- Appropriateness of the methodology (15%)
- Interpretation of the results (15%)
- Value of the research or creative activity (15%)
- Ability of each presenter to articulate the work involved (15%)
- Organization of the material presented (15%)
- Ability of each presenter to respond to questions from the jury and the general audience (10%)
Each student will have five (5) minutes to set up their computer for the PowerPoint presentation, ten (10) minutes for an oral presentation and five (5) minutes to respond to juror and audience questions.
Papers will be grouped for presentation in the following categories, which will also be used in the statewide competition:
- Behavioral and Social Sciences
- Biological and Agricultural Sciences
- Business, Economics, and Public Administration
- Creative Arts and Design
- Engineering and Computer Science
- Health, Nutrition, and Clinical Sciences
- Humanities and Letters
- Physical and Mathematical Sciences
The Division of Academic Affairs reserves the right to adjust (i.e., combine or divide) these categories as numbers of submissions necessitate.
