President Conoley: The Role of Research at CSULB

CSULB President Conoley

From my perspective, the key roles a university plays in our society are to preserve the best knowledge from the past, generate/discover new knowledge (and create cool new things), and prepare the next generation to do the same. Our faculty members' expertise in research is foundational to Cal State Long Beach’s success as a great university. Research across The Beach is quite varied—from dance to bioengineering—but the research process of comprehensive study, dissemination, and incremental theory-building is at the heart of deep educational proficiencies and dispositions for all of us.

As a faculty member, I found that involving my students in research was a perfect vehicle to increase their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. As we read reports of previous research, generated hypotheses to guide our studies, and then struggled to make sense of findings, we became masters of particular areas within psychology. Students’ energy and curiosity increased my own excitement and sharpened my research questions.

I am so impressed by Beach faculty and student research accomplishments. Our work in addressing the compelling problems facing the world or in adding to the cultural capital of our society, whether externally funded or not, is the defining feature of our contributions to our state, nation, and world.

With great admiration,

Jane Close Conoley
President
