The University Library's Role in Supporting Research

Roman Kochan, Dean & Director, University Library - February 2015

The University Library provides all the necessary human, physical, and informational means to support faculty and student research at CSULB around the clock and every single day of the year.

Research is about finding information. Our information resources include a collection of 1 million printed materials that include maps and media, as well as print books, access to approximately 100,000 electronic books, over 200 electronic research databases utilized to search for article information, including peer-reviewed journal articles which is the most assigned research assignment on our campus, and access to over 70,000 scholarly journals. Not only are the electronic materials state of the art and reliable, they are available remotely (off campus) to current CSULB faculty, staff, and students 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Successful research begins and ends with the right support. All the research tools in the world wonít help if there are not actual humans to help guide you to use them. Human library resources include an exceptional staff team who are customer service oriented and on site all hours the library is open to the public providing the highest level of service. Our 16 librarians are truly exceptional information professionals. They bring subject expertise, a love of teaching and learning, and a desire to share the joys of research. Research doesnít happen in a vacuum.

A comfortable environment is paramount to conducting research. Whether your preference is a quiet corner, a boisterous collaborative space, a coffee house, or your own home! The library provides every one of those options. Our six-story building provides ample space to sit alone or with colleagues, read quietly, or practice online presentations using state-of-the-art multimedia tables. Research isnít static. Research needs change, and the Library will change with it! The Library will continue to grow and change as our patronís research needs do.
