Record Number of External Submissions and Awards

I am pleased to share that grant development activities at our institution continue to show growth, both in record numbers of faculty external proposal submissions and awards. Our good news also extends to several staff members that either have joined us in the past year or have received promotions. I would like to introduce them to you.

In FY 2016-2017, ORSP pre-award staff assisted 211 individuals who submitted over 300 new external grant proposals, totaling $113 million. With this growth comes additional pre-award staff support. Nazareth Lijiam will assist full time with pre-award activities.

Of the faculty submitted proposals, 88 principal investigators received 169 new awards, totaling $53 million from a variety of sponsors, including federal, state, and local agencies, as well as private corporations and foundations.

ORSPís post-award activities continue to be very busy as well with over 400 new and continuing projects needing to be administered, totaling over $35 million in annual expenditures. Mary Thoen has joined the department full time to assist with these post-award services.

Maria Reyes came on board as Senior Director of Sponsored Programs. She is responsible for providing overall pre- and post-award administrative services for sponsored programs. She brings over eight years of experience working in sponsored programs within the CSU system.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Jason Wang join us last year to oversee the universityís compliance activities, and along with him is Tiffany Rose, who was hired to serve IRB as the Human Subjects Compliance Specialist. The IRB reviewed over 550 protocol submissions in FY 2016-2017.

To assist me with coordinating department activities is Annie Hong.

We look forward to another exciting year of growth in RSCA activities!

Best wishes,

~ Simon Kim
