I am pleased to announce that Dr. Simon Kim will serve as the new Interim Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs, effective Fall 2014.
I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Andrew (Zed) Mason for his excellent leadership as Interim Associate Vice President. He has been a dedicated, effective, and tireless advocate for research support for faculty, including research that involves students. Dr. Mason will continue in the position through this transition.
Dr. Kim, a faculty member in the Department of Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling, has nearly 20 years of experience as a faculty member and administrator at the program, department, college and university levels. As an administrator, he has supported faculty in their research and grant activities, led strategic planning and assessment, managed budgets, and built collaborations among educational and community agencies. He has a track record as both principal investigator for grants he authored and serving as program evaluator on other grants.
Dr. Kim has served as Interim Associate Vice President of Student Services, Acting Associate Dean of Graduate Programs for the College of Education, Chair of the Department of Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling, Associate Director of the Center for Language Minority Education and Research, and Senior Director of Advising and Retention in Academic Affairs.
Dr. Kim completed his doctoral work at the University of Southern California in the area of educational psychology with a specialization in research methodology and program evaluation. He has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and participated in internal and external grant and contract activities on K-16 educational partnerships and accountability, studies of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and the conceptualization and practice of evaluation of educational programs.
Dr. Kim is currently an evaluator for the Core-Area Literacy & Academic Success for Students (CLASS) Project designed to help history and language arts high school teachers incorporate problem-based inquiry, consistent use of English Learner strategies, and content-area literacy in their instruction. He was an evaluator for CSULB’s $2.8 million Hispanic Serving Institution grant and has been an evaluator for grants funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation and the California Post-Secondary Education Commission.
