Did You Know?

VibriseeA team of five students from the Industrial Design Program won third place in the fifth annual Biomimicry Student Design Challenge for their design “Vibrisee,” an illuminated safety system for bicyclists inspired by whiskers and bioluminescent aquatic organisms.

The students, Channing Shattuck, Aaron Gray, Brandon Ryan, Kendra Schmiedeberg and Queendy Chan, were enrolled in David Teubner’s 333A Industrial Design Methodology course and Wesley Woelfel’s 333B Industrial Design Methodology course while they worked on the project.

President Conoley to Give First Convocation Address

President Jane Close Conoley will address the campus community at the 2014 Annual Convocation on Friday, August 22. ASI President Joe Phillips, Academic Senate Chair Dan O’Connor and Interim Provost David Dowell will also speak to faculty and staff.

The event begins at 8 am with a continental breakfast in the Dance Courtyard. The Convocation program will run from 9 – 10:30 am in the Carpenter Center. Faculty and staff can meet President Conoley immediately following Convocation until 12:30 pm on the Carpenter Center terrace.

Final Exams for Most Wednesday-only Classes Set for December 10

Wednesday, December 10 will be a student study day except for students whose Wednesday-only class final exam was previously scheduled for Wednesday, December 17. Final exams for these Wednesday-only classes will be held on December 10.

These changes appear in the current final exam schedule posted on the Enrollment Services website.

This change was recommended by the Campus Academic Calendar Committee because students in the affected classes would have a two-week hiatus between the end of instruction and the final exams.

Leadership Fellows Program Open to Faculty and Staff

President Jane Close Conoley and Interim Provost David Dowell are pleased to announce that faculty and staff can submit applications for the second cohort of the Leadership Fellows Program. This two-year professional development program was created in 2013 to identify and provide experiential learning opportunities in a collaborative setting for future campus and CSU leaders.

Candidates for the program are likely to be mid-career personnel who are motivated to enhance their leadership, knowledge, skills and professional dispositions.

  • Strongest academic candidates include senior faculty, program directors, department chairs and associate deans.
  • Strongest staff candidates include mid-career staff at the Administrator II level or above.

Interested faculty and staff are invited to attend one of the following Information Sessions:

  • Wednesday, September 3 at 4 pm in the Karl Anatol Center (AS-119)
  • Thursday, September 4 at 12 pm in Brotman Hall-302

Free Tickets to a Bob Cole Conservatory Concert

The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music is offering faculty and staff two free tickets per semester to any of its concerts in the Daniel Recital Hall.

New Interim Director of Servers, Systems and Websites

Jesse Santana has been appointed Interim Director of Servers, Systems and Websites in Information Technology Services (ITS), overseeing many mission-critical, enterprise systems such as campus email, authentication services, identity management (BeachID), active directory, virtual server hosting, file storage, and the new campus Single Sign-On (SSO) system.

Santana joined the campus in 1997 after working for private companies as a network and system administrator and technical support manager. He has been a network analyst, operating systems analyst and, most recently, assistant director and lead for the ITS Enterprise Services Group.

Santana has a B.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology from DeVry Institute of Technology and a graduate certificate in Chicano Studies from CSULB. He is working on his master’s degree in Educational Technology & Media Leadership at CSULB.

Property and Lost & Found Sale/Auction

The Property Office will hold a sale/auction of university property identified as no longer needed by the campus, as well as unclaimed items in the Lost and Found Department on Wednesday, September 24 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Friendship Walk East near the SSPA building.

Items to be sold include books, jewelry, CDs, calculators, backpacks, sunglasses, etc. Bicycles will be auctioned starting at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Items are sold/auctioned “as is” on a cash and carry basis only – no checks, debit or credit cards accepted. What isn’t sold will be donated to Goodwill. If you have questions, contact the Property Office at extension 5-1579.
