Inside CSULB

Weekly Wednesday Message

August 28, 2013

Welcome to the 2013-14 academic year!

Thanks to everyone who attended Convocation last week. If you were unable to attend, transcripts of the speeches given are available on the Convocation website. We anticipate that the video of the event will be available within the next several days.

We are looking forward to a great year ahead. As I mentioned in the Academic Affairs Budget Update distributed on Monday, we have a stable budget outlook for the first time in several years and are able to provide increased funding to colleges and departments this year.

We are very pleased to welcome 34 wonderful new tenure-track faculty members with impressive credentials and diverse talents.

We are excited to open three additional very high technology classrooms, two in the CBA building and one additional in the Academic Services building. The one we opened last year has proven very popular with both students and faculty. The additional AS room was supported by a private donor.

With an improved budget, we are excited to be supporting 73 additional RSCA awards to faculty this year for a total of about 182 awards.

We are also excited to be launching a two-year Leadership Fellows Program for experienced faculty, chairs, or associate deans interested in enhancing their leadership knowledge and skills.

Throughout the year we will keep you informed of the issues impacting higher education and CSULB. We will also continue to highlight the many achievements of our faculty, staff and students. I hope that you will share with me your collective and individual accomplishments so that they can be included in the Wednesday Message and on our website.

I am honored to be serving as your interim provost. I look forward to working with you throughout the year.
