Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA)
What is this: Recent well publicized court cases involving higher education have led to the 2013 amendments of California’s “Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act” (CANRA). As a result, the Chancellor’s Office has issued Executive Order 1083 (EO 1083). EO 1083 designates all CSU employees as mandated reporters and requires employees to file a police report when they become aware of or suspect child abuse in the course of their work duties. Comprehensive information regarding CANRA, EO 1083, and the responsibilities of a mandated reporter have been sent via campus email and hard copy to each campus employee.
What do I need to do: The package everyone received includes a full copy of the relevant penal code (sections 11165.7, 11166, and 11167) and a link to EO 1083. All employees need to review the EO 1083 materials, sign (Attachment A) and return the signed document to your manager or department’s Administrative Services Manager (ASM) no later than March 1, 2013. To facilitate employees’ understanding of the law, Attachment A summarizes the law and provides a campus contact, Larisa Hamada, Director of Equity and Diversity, should anyone have questions about the law or a situation that potentially should be reported.
Next steps: All of the relevant legal information employees need regarding the duties of a mandated reporter have been provided in the materials referenced above. However, mandatory supplemental training will soon be provided by the Chancellor’s Office. Once you receive your online training assignment, complete the training and turn in your certificate of completion (Attachment B) to your manager or department’s ASM.

Follow up to January BeachBoard Outage
Desire2Learn executives visited campus on Tuesday, February 12 to reinforce their commitment to customer service. This meeting was in response to the BeachBoard service outage from January 29 – 31 and the continued latency February 4 – 5 which impacted students, faculty and staff.
In addition, the vendor hosted a conference call where they outlined the events that led to the outage, the recovery, and the steps they are taking moving forward.
CSULB continues to work closely with the vendor as they outline their specific plans for moving forward with the CSULB BeachBoard environment.

Campus Indirect Cost Returns Now Posted to RS-Funds
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is pleased to announce that it has refunded a total of $426,322 back to the campus community in accordance with the Provost’s Indirect Return Policy Statements (July 15, 2011, revised Nov. 4, 2011) and the agreed distribution formulae used for the allocation of funds to PI’s and Departments within the individual Colleges or Academic Units. "News and Insights from NSF" Seminar Thursday
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is pleased to announce a seminar for faculty entitled “News and Insights from NSF" on Thursday, February 21 from noon – 1 pm.
The seminar is presented by Dr. Simon Malcomber, a faculty member from the Department of Biological Sciences who is on temporary assignment with NSF. He is currently serving as Program Director, Systematics and Biodiversity Science Cluster within the Division of Environmental Biology at NSF.
The seminar will be held in FO5-116. Faculty who intend to submit a NSF grant proposal are strongly encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to Sofia Batshoun.
Reminder: Nominations for Awards Honoring Contributions to Women Due March 4
The President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) invites nominations from the campus community for the following awards:
The Advancement of Women Awards: These awards honor individuals for their outstanding work on behalf of women. The categories for this award are students, lecturers, tenured/tenure-track faculty members, staff members and administrators.
The Honoring Community Organizations and their Campus Partners Award: This award recognizes the impact that collaborations between CSULB and community-based organizations have on the lives of women.

Deadline is Tomorrow for American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days
Tomorrow is the last day to place orders for the American Cancer Society’s FINAL Daffodil Days - Gift of Hope campaign.
Items available for purchase include:
- 10 Daffodils in a bouquet ($10)
- Sunshine Vase with 10 Daffodils ($20)
- Vision Vase with 20 Daffodils ($35)
- Gift of Hope - daffodils anonymously delivered to a cancer patient (minimum order $25)
- Bear of Hope - teddy bear anonymously delivered to child receiving cancer care (minimum order $25)
Your contribution will help fight the battle against cancer, as well as support the strategic priorities of our university. Since 1996, CSULB has raised over $70,000 for the Daffodil Days campaign, bringing in almost $6,000 in 2009 alone. Flowers will be delivered Tuesday, March 19.
Did You Know?
The Community Clinic in the College of Education is offering psychoeducational assessments to determine a child's individual academic and cognitive strengths and weaknesses. The clinic is still accepting applications for the next session, which starts on Thursday, February 28. Applications are due Tuesday, February 26.
Tests are administered at the Clinic in ED2-155 by the College of Education’s school psychology graduate students. Cognitive strengths/weaknesses may explain achievement deficits. All clients receive a final report that details their assessment results, implications and individual recommendations for supporting that child's future learning.
In addition, the Clinic offers tutoring/academic interventions in reading, writing and math, as well as individual/couples/marriage/family counseling. For additional information, visit the Community Clinic website.
