Distinguished Speaker Series Tomorrow
Learn about our nation’s geopolitical challenges and building, training and leading highly effective teams from a senior member of the U.S. National Defense team tomorrow, October 18, at CSULB’s Distinguished Speaker Series.
Retired U.S. Navy Admiral Eric Olson, former commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command and 38-year Navy SEAL, will discuss principles of teamwork and leadership in his address, “The World at Night: Creating Special Operations Forces to Counter Asymmetrical Challenges.”
Barbecue dinner will be served from 6 - 7:30 pm. Musical Salute by the University Brass Ensemble starts at 6:15 pm and runs until 7:15 pm.
Olson will begin speaking at 7:30 pm at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. A panel discussion will follow at 8:30 pm with a picture-signing session at 9 pm.
Discount tickets to the event for CSULB faculty/staff are $30 (normally $40). Dinner tickets are $15. Order event and/or dinner tickets or get additional information online. All proceeds from the Distinguished Speaker Series benefit CSULB Student Scholarships.
October is Textbook Requisition Month
Help the University Bookstore ensure that textbooks arrive in time for the first day of class. Faculty, please submit your winter and spring requisitions by Friday, October 26th.
Although requisitions will be accepted after this date, your timely submission will make a difference for our students.
- Your partnership provides students with access to critical information that is regulated by state and federal law - including details of course materials needed.
- Your submissions allow our campus partners more time to customize textbooks, which are critical to the success of our students who have special needs.
- October submissions can also reduce the cost of books by allowing more time to search for used editions, therefore putting more used books on the shelves.
Requisitions can be submitted online by visiting the University Bookstore - Faculty Resource Center page or by going directly to the Requisition Ordering Site.

Training Schedule on New Grants and Contracts Reporting System
Principal Investigators (PI) and account holders will shortly be receiving emails with monthly reports generated from the old IFAS system. Shortly thereafter they will receive reports showing the account balances generated from the new Data Warehouse reporting system tied to PeopleSoft (together with a mapping table that shows the conversion of the old IFAS project number to their new PeopleSoft chartfield).
To help PI’s and account holders run their own reports and to capitalize upon the new reporting features offered through the Data Warehouse system we have scheduled training sessions on the following dates and times.

The workshop will be held in the ITS Training room BH-180D. Please register for the CFS Data Warehouse Training workshop online.
Capacity is limited to 15 attendees so please register early to avoid disappointment. Additional workshops will be scheduled if needed. Printed guidelines and other resources will also be made available on the Foundation and ORSP websites.
All PIs must complete both a Finance Authority Agreement and a Security Application in order to access reports of their accounts through the Data Warehouse. In particular, we ask that workshop attendees complete and submit their forms prior to the workshop so that they can access their accounts during the training session. Read the rest of this message.
Register for Ukleja Center’s Fall Roundtable
Faculty are invited to the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership’s Fall Faculty Roundtable on Friday, November 9 from 8:30 – 11:30 am at the Barrett Conference Center. November 1 is the deadline to RSVP to Jane.Roeder@csulb.edu.
The event will focus on the following objectives:
- Identifying ethics research funding interests, needs and sources,
- Increasing the visibility and importance of teaching ethics across the curriculum,
- Encouraging continual learning and peer support for faculty members teaching ethics,
- Providing feedback and direction to the Center on next steps of research agenda,
- Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration in conducting research on ethics training and other ethics-related topics.

Faculty Supper Club Focuses on ‘Insights from Playing Videogames’
Dr. Sayantani Mukherjee (Marketing) will discuss "The 'Fun' of Consumption: Insights from Playing Videogames" at the Fall Faculty Supper Club on Wednesday, November 7 from 5 – 7 pm at the Anatol Center (AS-119).
Dr. Mukherjee will discuss her research examining the phenomenology of consumer fun within the context of videogaming experiences and its implications for designing and advertising ‘fun’ videogames.

Is Your Department Office Scary Enough?
Is your department office scary enough to win the Halloween Spooktacular Office Decorating Contest?
Wednesday, October 24 is the last day to register. Contact Laura.Stone@csulb.edu or call extension 5-4503 to sign up. Judging will begin at 8 am on October 31. Prizes are awarded to small and large offices. Take a look at photos from last year’s Spooktacular for decorating ideas.
Additional Spooktacular activities will take place from 12 -1 pm at the speaker’s platform in front of the University Bookstore. They include:
- An individual and group costume parade and contest
- A pre-carved pumpkin contest
- Refreshments/treats and spooky music
- Awards ceremony for all contests
Registration starts at 11:45 am for the individual and group costume contests & pre-carved pumpkin contest.
