7 Days of Service:  October 19-24

7 Days of ServiceAn award-winning documentary screening, a town hall forum on the economy, and opportunities to discover how to make a difference locally and abroad are among the events taking place during the 10th annual 7 Days of Service at California State University, Long Beach, October 19 – 24.

“7 Days of Service highlights our university’s commitment to serving our local, national and international communities,” said Juan Benitez, executive director of the Center for Community Engagement. “It’s an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and the larger community to showcase ongoing community engagement efforts and explore issues of importance here in Long Beach and throughout the world.”

All events are free and open to faculty, staff, students and community members. 7 Days of Service begins at 4:30 pm on Monday, October 19 with the State of the Center at the Anatol Center in the Academic Services Building, Room 110. Benitez will discuss the Center’s current projects, programs and initiatives as well as plans for the year ahead. Awards will also be presented to 10 students, three faculty members and one community organization for their commitment to service. A screening of the award-winning documentary, The Hip Hop Project , will follow the State of the Center from 7-9 pm in the Beach Auditorium in the University Student Union. The Hip Hop Project tells the story of a group of New York City teenagers who transform their lives using hip hop as a vehicle for self-development and personal discovery. On Tuesday, October 20, a panel and town hall forum, Critical Perspectives on the Economy: What’s Happened and What Can We Do About It, will feature a conversation with Dennis Rockway from L.A. Legal Aid Foundation and economists Fadhel Kaboub and James Devine about the local and personal impact of the economy. The event will take place from 1–4 pm in the University Student Union Ballrooms. Internships for a Cause

11 am – 12:30 pm, Brotman Hall, Room 250

A panel of non-profit organizations, including representatives from Pretend City and the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club, will share internship opportunities, provide information on how to apply and offer advice on how to start a career in the non-profit industry. Green Internships

The City of Long Beach Office of Sustainability and Long Beach Green Business Association will discuss green internships and offer ways in which faculty, students and staff can become involved in a green initiative. Call (562) 985-4151 for more information.

October 21

Volunteer Round-up

11 am – 2 pm, Psych Quad

Faculty, staff and students can make a pledge of community service hours, view posters of service projects and meet representatives from community organizations. Contact (562) 985-7131, for more information.

Going Global: Internships Abroad

11 am – 12 pm, Brotman Hall, Room 250

Learn how to find internships abroad, discover your options as an intern, volunteer or paid employee and learn the dos and don’ts of interning abroad from experienced students. Call (562) 985-4151 for more information.

International Service Learning: How Students and Faculty Participate

2 – 3:15 pm, Anatol Center, Academic Services Building, Room 110

Committee for Community Collaboration

Community Partner Workshop

Make a Difference Day Service Project
