The Department of Nursing has become the School of Nursing and University College and Extension Services (UCES) has adopted a new name that better reflects its educational programs. Both changes were approved by the Academic Senate on May 14.
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is the eighth university in the CSU and only the 14th university in the state to have a School of Nursing.
"There is increased professionalization associated with school status," said Nursing Chair Lucy Huckabay. "It will provide us with increased access to federal research grants and greater opportunities for research collaboration with other institutions. It will also help us continue to attract high-caliber faculty in a market that is very competitive."
As a school, it will also be easier for faculty to proactively seek opportunities to develop a professional doctoral program or a joint Ph.D. program with other doctoral degree granting institutions.
Established in 1953, CSULB's Nursing Department has played a leading role in preparing highly qualified nurses for the state of California. With approximately 1,400 nursing, undergraduate and graduate nursing students, the department is the largest nursing program in the CSU system. An estimated 330 nursing degrees will be granted at Commencement this month. CSULB's Nursing Department is also the largest in types of programs, number of faculty and external funding sources.
UCES has changed its name to the College of Continuing & Professional Education (CCPE).
"Our new name - College of Continuing and Professional Education, truly reflects who we are and what we do - continuing higher education, serving professionals, educators, and the workforce at a higher level. Our new name is really driven by our new mission and vision," said Dean Jeet Joshee. "We provide university level continuing education programs to professionals and the workforce in many disciplines."
In partnership with CSULB's other Colleges and academic departments, CCPE currently offers 12 Masters Degrees and 2 undergraduate degrees. It also offers university credit courses to a large number of students through its Winter Term, Open University, May Intersession and professional certificate programs throughout the academic year. Each year, CCPE's American Language Institute brings hundreds of international students from around the world to CSULB for English language instruction, undergraduate and graduate degrees.
CCPE is also one of the major outreach arms of Cal State Long Beach that works with the public sector, non-profit organizations, industries and corporate clients. Through its Center for International Trade and Transportation (CITT), the College works with the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles as well as many goods movement industries. The Master of Arts in Global Logistics and the Global Logistics Specialists programs are known nationally and internationally.
Established in 1971, CCPE has continued to ask "How can we further extend the university's reach?" With its dedication to identifying and addressing the educational and professional needs most relevant to both local and global communities, CCPE continues to answer that question with innovative solutions.
