AVP Announces Plans for Office of Academic Technology

Associate Vice President for Academic Technology Don Gardner is bringing technology services within the Division of Academic Affairs together under one organization, enhancing efficiency in ways that will eventually lead to greater technology support for faculty, students and staff.

At a meeting on April 9, Gardner announced the new Office of Academic Technology, highlighting the customer focus of the new organization with the slogan "We Do IT for You. People Centered Technology Services."  Effective May 1, the office will incorporate the following services:

  • Help services
  • Classroom support services,
  • Instructional technology and multimedia services,
  • Desktop support and system administration services,
  • Web and application development services
  • Server hosting and server management services
  • Technology coordination, project planning and management services

The office’s services will span a broad range including such ongoing tasks as helping students reset their passwords for My CSULB and providing faculty with BeachBoard and multimedia classroom support.
Under the current structure portions of customer support and instructional technology are found in various offices throughout the Division, with the majority of technology resources housed in Library and Academic Technology Services. As part of the transition, most of the new team will be relocated to offices within the Administrative Services building adjacent to the Center for Faculty Development.  The goal is to accomplish the various moves prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

“Under the leadership of Dean Roman Kochan academic technology at CSULB has flourished. Now we are expanding upon what has been established,” said Gardner, who stepped into the newly created academic technology position in February after serving as chief information officer for Weber State University in Utah. “Bringing all of the division’s academic technology resources together under one organization will maximize efficiency and enable us to enhance customer support.  We are committed to providing the very best services to students, faculty and staff.  As the organization continues to evolve we will be able to increase student access to technology and further promote quality teaching, notable research and creative activity.”
Starting next month, the Office of Academic Technology will handle ongoing customer support services such as handling the calls that come to the help desk and troubleshooting email problems encountered by students, faculty and staff.  Responsibilities will also include helping faculty incorporate technology into their courses, distributing CSULB site-licensed software, constructing web pages for the division and managing academic data servers.
The associate vice president for academic technology position was established by Provost Karen L. Gould last fall to ensure the university will be a leader in academic technology. Gardner’s responsibilities include guiding academic technology planning and investments for CSULB's eight colleges, 2,000 faculty and 37,000 students. He will also lead the Division of Academic Affairs in assessing and planning academic technology initiatives and implementing academic technology priorities.  These will include such things as enhancing support for classroom instruction and facilitating the exploration of clickers, blogs, wikis, Web 2.0 services and other technologies to advance instruction.
