Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Reading and Language Arts 

The program described below was approved by the President on May 24, 1989.

The Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Reading and Language Arts is designed for elementary and secondary teachers who desire to increase their knowledge and ability to integrate the teaching of language arts, literature, and reading. Certificate holders may qualify as language arts resource personnel in some school districts. 

Admission Requirements: 

1. Compliance with all University requirements for admission to a graduate program; 

2. Hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education; 

3. Hold a current elementary or secondary teaching credential; 

4. Achieve a passing score on the CSULB Writing Proficiency Examination; 

5. Achieve at least 3.0 g.p.a. in the most recently completed 30 units of upper-division and graduate level study; 

6. Submit a written application to the program. 

Program Requirements: 

1. Complete the following 21 units of coursework: ED P 400, EDEL 540, 558, EDEL 451 or EDEL/EDSE 551, EDEL 550 or 553, and EDEL/EDSE 552 or EDEL 556, and three units of elective coursework chosen in consultation with the Reading Coordinator; 

2. Maintain at least 3.0 g.p.a. in all coursework for the program; and 

3. Complete all coursework within five years of admission to the program.
