This academic program was recommended by the Academic Senate in its
meeting of October 15, 1987 and received the concurrence of the President
on October 26, 1987.
SUBJECT: Master of Arts in Speech Communication Option in Communication
and Human Information Systems Master of Arts in Speech
Communication
The Department of Speech Communication offers two programs leading
to the Master of Arts degree. Students may pursue the General Studies
Option, a course of studies from the core areas of communication
studies and rhetorical studies with an opportunity for additional
work in interpersonal communication, organizational communication,
small group communication, interpretive communication of literature,
reader's theatre, communication education and training, or forensics
according to individual interest. Qualified students may select
the Option in Communication and Human Information Systems.
Option in Communication and Human Information Systems (code 5- 6848)
Prerequisites:
1. A bachelor's degree in any subject area with a minimum grade
point average of at least 2.5 in the last 60 semester units (90
quarter units) attempted.
2. A minimum of two years of full-time entry level to middle management
experience in private or public organizations as determined by the
Department Graduate Advisor and the Department Graduate Committee.
3. Completion of SPCH 448, 410/510, and 420/520, or their equivalents.
Advancement to Candidacy:
1. Satisfaction of all prerequisites.
2. Completion of at least six units of 500 and/or 600-level courses
in the designated course of study including SPCH 696 with a grade
point average of at least 3.0.
3. Satisfactory completion of the University Writing Proficiency
Examination.
4. Recommendation for advancement to candidacy by the Department
Graduate Committee, the Department Chair, and the School Associate
Dean of Graduate Studies.
Requirements for the Master of Arts Option in Communication and
Human Information Systems:
1. Completion of thirty units of graduate coursework composed of
SPCH 503, 534, 546, 600, 610, 611, 620, 632, 651, and 696.
2. Satisfactory completion of an eight-hour written comprehensive
examination and an oral defense of the written examination.
