The policy, recommended by the Graduate Council on May 13, 1981 and by Academic Senate September 17, 1981, and approved by the President on October 2, 198. SUBJECT:  DEPARTMENTAL GRADUATE STUDENT HONORS

In recognition of outstanding graduate student achievements, a department may honor graduating master's degree candidates by special recognition in the annual commencement ceremonies.  These honors are reserved throughout the university to two students (or a maximum of 10 percent) from a department.  Departmental honors are noted on the student's transcripts.  Department honors are usually restricted to students not otherwise recognized by University or school awards.  These contributions to the discipline, including outstanding seminar papers, artistic exhibitions, special achievements in field work, and in University committees and functions, as well as participation in scholarly and professional organizations resulting from student research.
