SUBJECT:    CERTIFICATE IN JAPANESE

The following policy statement recommended by the Academic Senate at its meeting of January 29, 1981, and approved by the President on February 24, 1981, as follows:


The Certificate Program in Japanese offers students an opportunity to develop spoken and written competency in modern Japanese and to acquire a broad introduction to various aspects of traditional and modern Japan.

The program is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in the private or public sectors, for which knowledge of Japan and command of the language is useful or necessary, and also for students who intend to pursue a graduate program in which such knowledge and competency are required.

Requirements for the Certificate in Japanese:

1.    A bachelor's degree (may be earned concurrently with the certificate).

2.    15 units of 400 level Japanese language courses.

3.    12 units of related upper division work from at least two disciplines.  These units must be approved by a member of the advisory committee.
