Obsolete Policy

SUBJECT: GRADUATE WRITING PROFICIENCY TEST

The following policy statement was recommended by the Academic Senate at its meeting of October 9, 1980, and approved by the President on October 29, 1980.

1. The writing proficiency test required for candidates at the baccalaureate level be used for candidates at the graduate level.

For Master's degree candidates, the writing proficiency test must be passed prior to advancement to candidacy.

2. The required achievement level be the same for the graduate students as it is for baccalaureate candidates and that this policy be reviewed within one year after test norms have been established.

3. Use of the test be consistent with the approved "Policy Statement on Writing Proficiency."

4. Each School be required to submit (1) a plan that-assesses a student's proficiency early enough in the program to allow time for remedial action, (2) a plan for counseling in the event of failure, and (3) a plan to advise and counsel foreign students.

5. The Writing Proficiency test for graduate students be effective fall, 1981 semester.

6. Certification be by the same committee that certifies baccalaureate candidates.

7. A graduate student who has passed the writing proficiency test continue to be certified with no time limit to such certification.

Effective: Fall 1981, for one year only.
