The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology (FACT)

The Purpose and Charge:

The purpose of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology (FACT) is to advise the University bodies involved in planning, development, implementation, and application of technology campus wide, including the Office of Academic Technology Services, the University Library and other Campus-based Technology Committees, on faculty and student issues related to academic technology.  The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology shall also assist in the communication and collaboration between, and among, various constituencies and communities of technology users. The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology reports to the Academic Senate.

The charge of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology includes, but is not limited to:

(1) serving as a consultative body on academic technology for the Academic Senate, drafting and making recommendations to the Academic Senate regarding policies on academic technology that need to be developed and revised,  promoting the effective utilization of resources designated for academic technology, and reporting to the Academic Senate  annually.

(2) advising the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Academic Senate  on faculty and student needs and interests, such as the use of technology to support teaching and learning, research, and faculty professional development;

(3) advising on issues that emerge from the use of technology  in areas such as distance learning, accessibility, copyright, soft-ware licensing, the generation and use of electronic data-bases, email, systems and servers, networks and network security, the campus wireless environment, etc.;

(4) reviewing and advising on emergent technologies; including participating in the review of Enhancing Educational Effectiveness through Technology (3ET) Grants;

(5) assisting with the integration of academic technology components campus-wide;

(6) seeking input from faculty and students  in order to identify problems and issues associated with the academic use of technology;

(7) providing channels of communication among the University Library and other Campus-based Information Technology Committees, and other entities involved in use of technology such as college technology labs, etc.,  and conveying  information on relevant decisions to the campus community

8) Consulting with the University Library Committee regarding resources and initiatives in information and print technologies.

Membership:

The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology shall consist of the following voting members:

Eight faculty members recommended by the Nominating Committee for approval by the Academic Senate.  Lecturers are eligible to serve on the committee.  The faculty membership shall represent the following areas of interest:

 1 librarian 

 2 faculty whose primary interest in academic technology is instructional support

 2 faculty whose primary interest in academic technology is in faculty research and/or    professional development

 3 faculty members chosen to represent diverse campus perspectives;

And the following three additional voting members:

2 staff members selected from the academic technology units in Academic Affairs, including one from the campus learning management system. Both staff members shall be appointed by Staff Council.

1 student selected by the Associated Students to serve for one year, with the option of reappointment

In addition, the following shall be ex-officio non-voting members of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology:

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs or Designee

Vice-President for Administration and Finance or Designee

The Dean of the Library or Designee

1 person representing the technical support service managers of the colleges from the College Technology Professional Advisory Committee (CTPAC)

(15 members; 11 voting members)

Members shall serve staggered three year terms with the option of reappointment.

The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology shall meet at least twice per semester, or more often if needed.

The Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology shall establish a website by which faculty and students can provide input, raise issues, and make suggestions regarding academic technology.
