UTEACH Multiple Subject Credential Program Pathway

The Urban Teacher Academy (UTEACH) pathway is a unique opportunity for students to combine pedagogy and practice in a personalized credential program designed to fully prepare future teachers in a hands-on supportive school setting. The UTEACH pathway is comprised of the same 40 units as the Traditional MSCP pathway however, the course sequence is structured differently and it is a cohort program. The UTEACH pathway begin only in the Fall semester. Candidates must successfully complete the prerequisite courses prior to beginning UTEACH in the fall. In the UTEACH pathway candidates’ student teach half the day four days a week and the full day one day a week while taking the pedagogy courses in the afternoon during both the fall and spring semester. The pedagogy courses are offered off campus at a partner elementary school.

Prerequisites

  • EDEL 380 Teaching & Learning in a Democratic Society (3 units)
    Corequisite: EDSP 303
  • EDSP 303 Preparing to Teach Special Populations in the General Education Classroom (1)
    Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in EDEL 380.
  • EDEL 413 Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices ( 2 units)
    Prerequisite: None
  • EDEL 431 Cultural and Linguistic Diversty in Schools (3 units)
    Prerequisite: None

Subject Specific Pedagogy and Student Teaching

Fall Semester

  • EDEL 452 Teaching & Learning Reading, K-8 (3 units)
    Prerequisite: Admission to the Multiple Subject Credential Program or Education Specialist Credential Program.
  • EDEL 462 Teaching & Learning Mathematics, K-8 (3 units)
    Prerequisites: Admission to the Multiple Subject Credential Program.
  • SCED 475 Teaching & Learning Science, K-8 (3 units)
    Prerequisites: Admission to the Multiple Subject Credential Program. SCED 401 or a bachelor's degree.
  • EDEL 482A Student Teaching (8 units)
    Prerequisites: Admission to 2042 Multiple Subject Credential Student Teaching including successful completion of Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) Tasks 1 and 2.

Spring Semester

  • EDEL 442 Teaching & Learning Language Arts, K-8 (3 units)
    Prerequisite: Admission to the Multiple Subject Credential Program.
  • EDEL 472 Teaching & Learning History/Social Science, K-8 (3 units)
    Prerequisites: Admission to the Multiple Subjects Credential Program.
  • EDEL 482A Student Teaching (8 units)
    Prerequisites: Admission to 2042 Multiple Subject Credential Student Teaching including successful completion of Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) Tasks 1 and 2.

Additional Requirements for UTEACH Bilingual Authorization (BILA)

Candidates wishing to pursue the Bilingual Authorization in addition to UTEACH should refer to the BILA Pathway below for pedagogy and culture emphasis requirements. These additional requirements must be completed along with prerequisite and corequisite courses, prior to beginning pedagogy and student teaching coursework.
