Minor in Spanish

Requirements

A minimum of 18 to 34 units in Spanish depending on language competency, at least 15 of which must be upper division. 

Language Competency:

Students must achieve intermediate competency in Spanish equivalent to SPAN 200, 201B, or SPAN 250 prior to enrolling in upper division coursework.  The total number of lower-division units depends on the student’s existing language competency and can range from 0 to 16 units depending on placement.

Upper Division Requirements (minimum of 15 upper division units, including):

  • SPAN 300 Advanced Grammar and Composition (6)
    Prerequisites: AP exam with a score of 4 or 5 or SPAN 200, or SPAN 201B or equivalent for non-native speakers. SPAN 250 or equivalent for heritage speakers.

Students must file a Declaration of Minor and receive counseling from the undergraduate advisors. The minor in Spanish is available to any non-Spanish major.

N.B.: No course used to satisfy any requirement for the Minor in Spanish may be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis.
