Minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Not open to students majoring in Linguistics. This is not a credential program for public school teaching.

Requirements

Take one of the following courses (3 units):

  • LING/ANTH 170 Introduction to Linguistics (3)
    rerequisite/Corequisite: Any GE Foundation course.
  • LING 425 Education Across Cultures (3)
    Prerequisites: GE Foundation requirements, one or more Exploration, and upper-division standing.

Note: the option of LING 425 is intended primarily for English Education majors. All others are recommended to take LING 170.

Take one of the following courses (3 units):

  • LING 329 Language Acquisition (3)
    Prerequisite: None.
  • LING 339 Linguistics for Cross-Cultural Academic Development (3)

Take all of the following courses (12 units):

  • LING 325 Modern English Grammar (3)
    Prerequisite: None.
  • LING 420 Phonology (3)
    Prerequisite: LING/ANTH 170 or consent of instructor.
  • LING 460 TESOL Composition (3)
    Prerequisite: LING 325 or consent of instructor.
  • LING 486 Second Language Teaching Methods (3)
    Prerequisite: LING 325 or consent of instructor.
