Topics and Modules

Individual documents are considered Topics. All Topics must be in a Module, aka folder.

Modules and Topics

To Create a new Topic

Note: All Topics must reside within a Module.

  1. Click Content on the navbar to access the Manage Content page.
  2. Click the Content New Topic icon New Topic icon beside the module where you would like add a topic or in the top tool menu.

  3. Choose one of the following:
    • Content Create New File icon Create New File
      • Copy and paste text or HTML. Use this to embed a video in your Content area.
    • Content Course File icon Course File
      •  To link to a document already uploaded to the course.
    • Content Upload File icon Upload New File
      •  To upload documents such as Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Excel, etc.
    • Content Quicklink icon Quicklink
      •  To link to a web site or to another area within the course.
  4. Choose the Module you want to add this topic to.  If you do not have a designated Module, then click the Add Module link to create a new module.
  5. Type a topic Title.
  6. Type a Short Title as an option. BeachBoard uses the short title in the Content Map widget to help users navigate through modules. If you don’t specify a short title, BeachBoard uses the Title field.
  7. Ignore the Hide Enumeration check box as it is turned off by default.

  8. Depending on what option you selected in Step 3, do the following:
    • Option Procedure

      1. Type the new name in the File Name field (This can be the same as the Title previously entered).
      2. Create your content in the Content area using the HTML Editor.

      1. Click the Browse button to locate the course file in Manage Files.
      2. Select the course file you want by clicking the radio button beside it.

      1. Click the Browse button to locate the file.
      2. Browse for the file on your computer, and select it. For a list of unsupported file types and extensions, see Restricted upload extensions.

      Content Quicklink icon Quicklink Do one of the following:
      1. Type the URL in the URL field.
      2. Click the Insert Quicklink icon beside the URL field, select a Category and Item, and click Insert

  9. Set further options and click Save, or to continue creating topics, click Save and New.

To Create a new Module

All Topics must reside within a Module. You can create modules within existing modules to establish a deeper hierarchy.

  1. Click Content on the navbar to access the Manage Content page.
  2. Click one of the Content New Module icon New Module icons.

  3. Type your module title in the Title field.
  4. Short Title is optional. BeachBoard uses the short BeachBoard uses the Title field.
  5. Ignore the Enumerations option as they are turned off by default..
  6. Set further options and click Save to save your changes, or to continue creating modules, click Save and New.

Option Procedure
Hide a module from participants’ view Click the Restrictions tab and select the Hide this module check box. All topics beneath this module are also hidden.
Set date/time restrictions Click the Restrictions tab and set the Start Date and End Date.
Set release conditions
  1. Click the Restrictions tab.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • To set pre-existing release conditions to the topic, click Attach Existing and select the conditions from the list in the pop-up window.
    • To create new conditions and attach them to the topic, click Create and Attach. For details on creating release conditions refer to Release Conditions.
  3. Choose whether access to the module is dependent on meeting all or any of your conditions.

Optional Tip:  Enumerations are turned off by default.  Instructors can make enumeration available by accessing Settings from the main Content area.  Settings are located in the box on the left of the Content area.  Once you click Settings, click the Enumerations tab, and select an enumeration style from the dropdown list in the Enumeration column.  Click Save.  Return to your Content to view the Enumerations.


  • Documents are limited to 20 MB each.
  • Avoid uploading large files (5 MB or higher) because students may not have robust Internet connections and will not be able to view them.
  • If students are required to open files dependent on specific software or media players, please let them know so that they can access the file.

Upload files from your computer directly into the Content tool. The following file extensions are not supported by BeachBoard:

Note: For web documents, BeachBoard strips the <title> tag and text within that tag from user created web documents.
